SABI Newsletter - Spring 23

President's Letter

The lede – Social media is a mess. Modes of communication have expanded seemingly exponentially since Facebook became open to the general public in 2006. Whether it’s email, FB, Twitter, Instagram, Tik-Tok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, or Doximity (I’m sure I’ve missed a couple of dozen,) everyone is vying for your time and attention. Of which we have less and less. And less.

SABI does need to reach our members and future members at times; we want to make sure you hear about our webinars, the call for topics (hopefully you all submitted!), the call for abstracts, and events related to the annual meeting. But SABI doesn't want to make your lives more complicated. You may see us reach out on multiple platforms, but the message is always the same...

Becoming a Reviewer for JCAT

We would like to thank again all those who review for JCAT! Your contributions are central to improving the quality of the work submitted to the journal.

If you are interested in becoming a reviewer, please send a copy of your CV to Eric Tamm, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, JCAT (eprad76@hotmail.com) along with information regarding your areas of interest/expertise.

JCAT regularly recognizes, in print, and at the annual meeting, reviewers, with the degree of recognition commensurate with their level of contribution.

Recognition of SABI-authored articles

As SABI’s official journal, we encourage and support articles from SABI members. Our Associate Editors will soon be judging SABI-authored papers published in JCAT in 2022. That judged the best will be recognized at the SABI Annual Meeting in the upcoming fall.

To be eligible for future awards, remember, at the time of submitting your work to JCAT, to answer “yes” to the question regarding whether at least one co-author is a SABI member (and that person must, at the time of submission, and throughout the remainder of the year, be a member in good standing to make sure they are accurately identified as a SABI member when we check author lists against the SABI member roster).

JCAT is looking for submissions in the following “hot topic” areas of interest as identified by our editors and wider Editorial Board.

We are accepting review articles and original scientific submissions. Please feel free to reach out to Eric Tamm, FSABI, Editor-in-Chief (eprad76@hotmail.com) with ideas or outlines which he can share with the specialty Associate Editors to see if proposed submissions would be a good fit for the journal and to get helpful suggestions from them.

All submissions will be subject to blinded peer review, must score sufficiently well with reviewers and the Associate Editor to be published, and will be on a “first come” basis, i.e., if a topic has already been covered sufficiently by an earlier submission(s), we will need to decline later submissions on that topic. Here are topics (not in order of preference):

  • Photon Counting CT
  •  Fast MR Imaging, such as “fast imaging of the abdomen,” etc.
  • Prostate PSMA imaging
  • PET/MRI
  • Artificial intelligence- particularly tangible applications

o  Caution: we have had to reject several submissions because of overfitting, and/or too small test sets, and/or concerns on lack of generalizability of results.

  • Practice management
  • Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance
  • Musculoskeletal: 3d imaging of joints, functional imaging of joints
  • Updates in percutaneous interventions
  •  Treatment response in oncologic imaging, particularly novel methods
  • Radiomics

o  Again, we advise caution to avoid issues such as overfitting, etc. We have had to reject several articles because of similar issues in radiomics as in artificial intelligence.
