What a great year it has been! And with graduation ceremonies on the horizon, it's only going to get better!

This year saw so many milestones, both large and small. We started the year with a big one: the opening of the SFPS Early Childcare Center as a support for SFPS staff.

The center has drawn accolades and visitors from across the spectrum, including U.S. Education Deputy Secretary Cindy Marten, Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernández, legislators and legislative committee staff, parents and families. You name it, they all love it!

The cooperative work between SFPS and the NEA-Santa Fe to launch the center was well received at the National School Boards Association conference in April. And Grace Mayer, NEA-Santa Fe president, is receiving a national award this summer for her work in fulfilling her long-held dream for an early childhood center to serve the young children of SFPS employees.

It would be an understatement to say that a lot has happened since we opened school in August.

• SFPS became the first district in New Mexico to lay the foundation for equitable learning by launching standards-based learning and grading.
• I was honored to represent SFPS on a phone call in August with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. Education Secretary Dr. Miguel Cardona that spotlighted our district as one of 15 outstanding best practice examples of using funding from President Biden’s American Rescue Plan to support students, fully staff schools and ensure student health and safety.
• U.S. Education Deputy Secretary Marten visited SFPS in April as part of the U.S. Department of Education's Raise the Bar: Lead the World tour, a call to action to transform P-12 education and unite around what truly works. She visited Ramirez Thomas Elementary School and Capital High School to see three Raise the Bar focus areas in action--Achieve Academic Excellence, Boldly Improve Learning Conditions and Create Pathways for Global Engagement--and learned about SFPS' standards-based learning model, wraparound supports for educators and our innovative work-based learning program.

Now comes the moment we've all been looking forward to: high school graduation! As seniors cross the finish line, I know we've given them our best as they enter college, start their careers or even take a breather year. The world awaits them and they are ready to rise to the challenge!

I thank you for all you've done as a member of our SFPS community to raise the bar this year. I wish you lots of fun and relaxation over the coming months and look forward to welcoming you back in 2023-24!

¡Qué gran año ha sido! Y con las ceremonias de graduación en el horizonte, ¡solo va a mejorar!

Este año vio tantos hitos, tanto grandes como pequeños. Comenzamos el año con uno grande: la apertura del Centro de Atención Infantil Temprana de SFPS como apoyo para el personal de SFPS.

El centro ha atraído elogios y visitantes de todo el espectro, incluida la subsecretaria de Educación de los EE. UU., Cindy Marten, la congresista Teresa Leger Fernández, legisladores y personal del comité legislativo, padres y familias. ¡Lo que sea, a todos les encanta!

Partners in Education presented seven SFPS educators with Teachers Who Inspire Awards between May 3rd-18th. Teachers are nominated for the award by their peers for their outstanding qualities in the classroom, leadership among their co-workers and service to the community.

Lori Andrews, Santa Fe High School

Lori Andrews, a teacher in the Santa Fe High School Visual Arts Department, is "an absolute lynchpin at Santa Fe High School," commanding the respect of the school administration, her peers and the community and being "thought of as one of the kindest, most dependable, and loving instructors this district has to offer," said her nominators.

Lori Andrews, maestra en el Departamento de Artes Visuales de la Escuela Secundaria de Santa Fe, es "un eje central absoluto en la Escuela Secundaria de Santa Fe", ganándose el respeto de la administración de la escuela, sus compañeros y la comunidad y siendo "considerada como una de las más amables , los instructores más confiables y amorosos que este distrito tiene para ofrecer", dijeron sus nominadores.

Tammy Gorman, Nye Early Childhood Center

Tammy Gorman is in her first year as a lead teacher at Nye. She told The New Mexican that her motivation comes from a Spanish-speaking student she met when working as an educational assistant. They learned how to converse after Gorman worked with her over six years. The student will graduate from Capital High School this May. “I feel like everybody has their own story. I have that girl that changed my life, and everybody has a story like that," she said. Her nominators said she "inspires her kiddos to want to come to class by first unconditionally loving them and their families."

Jen Kennedy, Nava Elementary School

Jen Kennedy, a third grade bilingual teacher at Nava for the past 11 years, "greets her students every single morning with a personal message making sure each student knows they are seen, heard, and essential," said her nominators. "She challenges each student to learn and grow each day and at their individual level--whether they are learning English as a 2nd or 3rd language, learning to work with a partner, learning to organize their materials, using their knowledge to apply to new situations, or to further develop their mathematical thinking," making it all appear effortless.

Scott Larson, Mandela International Magnet School

Scott Larson, who teaches 8th grade Integrated Science, 10th grade Chemistry and 11th/12th grade IB Theory of Knowledge at Mandela, "has inspired and instilled a love for the outdoors in his students by offering many extensions to learning outside of the classroom," said his nominators. "With Mr. Larson as a sponsor, Mandela high school students competed in the New Mexico Governor’s STEM Challenge as ‘four year in a row’ finalists, winning science lab and company sponsorships each year.

Steven Ortiz, Nye Early Childhood Center

Steven Ortiz, who teaches a medically fragile program in Nye's highly-structured special education preschool program, "has a gentleness that children respond to. Even if they cannot see, hear or understand his words, they know he is a safe haven," said his nominator. "Mr. Ortiz helps his students make academic progress by first ensuring that EVERY student is accepted and can fully participate in his classroom. Wheelchairs, g-tubes, trachs, etc. are not a reason for a student to not fully participate."

Darren Smith, Wood Gormley Elementary School

A teacher for 25 years, Darren Smith is a fourth grade teacher at Wood Gormley Elementary School. As noted by his nominator, he makes learning fun through engaging lessons, like bringing in various animal skulls to compare, contrast and explore. He ends the school year with students teaching their peers about a country they've studied, including cooking food from that country and presenting on what they've learned. He is a staunch advocate for teachers, serves as NEA's Wood Gormley representative and inspires others to actively advocate for students.

Darren Smith, maestro durante 25 años, es maestro de cuarto grado en la Escuela Primaria Wood Gormley. Malcolm Smith-Carlile, Amy Biehl Community School and Santa Fe High School

An enrichment teacher serving all grades, Smith-Carlile spends Monday through

Thursday at Amy Biehl and Friday at Santa Fe High School. With "an absolutely

top-notch personality," he treats all students with respect, speaks respectfully

and calmly and honors their thinking, said his nominator. One student said, "In 2020, when we were doing online school, he helped me and many others by sending things to our doors at home for projects... He stands up for me if I ever need it and does the cool projects and got us a class pet, an aquatic turtle.”

Un maestro de enriquecimiento que atiende a todos los grados, Smith-Carlile pasa de lunes a Jueves en Amy Biehl y viernes en Santa Fe High School. Con "absolutamente personalidad de primer nivel", trata a todos los estudiantes con respeto, habla con respeto y con calma y honra su pensamiento, dijo su nominador. What a year it has been! SFPS' new Work-Based Learning (WBL) Program has seen exponential growth during the 2022-23 school year and is continuing to expand this summer.

The program has partnered with 24 business partners this summer that are collaborating to provide over 100 new young professionals with an opportunity to earn while they learn new employability skills and explore some of Santa Fe’s highest-valued careers. 

WBL does more than provide a student intern with an opportunity to learn new employability skills and explore a career. A couple of interns found their path through their internships this school year.

Said Dulce Garcia from Santa Fe High School, “I didn’t know I wanted to become a teacher until I experienced the SFPS Early Childhood Center internship. Thanks to my mentor's guidance, informing me of next steps on college and licensing processes, I am deciding to go to college to become an educator!”

Emily Garcia from Capital High School confirmed her career aspirations through her internship experience. “While interning at Creative Startups, I have been able to learn hands-on about entrepreneurship and business startup processes," she said. "I visited the UNM School of Business also. These experiences confirmed my goals to become a business owner!”

The WBL program plans to expand its internship offerings to other SFPS high schools in 2023-24 and expects to host over 150 junior and senior interns.

Que año ha sido! El nuevo programa de aprendizaje basado en el trabajo (WBL) de SFPS experimentó un crecimiento exponencial durante el año escolar 2022-23 y continúa expandiéndose este verano.

El programa se ha asociado con 24 socios comerciales este verano que están colaborando para brindar a más de 100 nuevos jóvenes profesionales la oportunidad de ganar mientras aprenden nuevas habilidades de empleabilidad y exploran algunas de las carreras más valoradas de Santa Fe.

WBL hace más que brindarle a un estudiante en prácticas la oportunidad de aprender nuevas habilidades de empleabilidad y explorar una carrera. Un par de pasantes encontraron su camino a través de sus pasantías este año escolar.

Dijo Dulce García de la Escuela Secundaria Santa Fe, “No sabía que quería ser maestra hasta que experimenté la pasantía en el Centro de Primera Infancia de SFPS. Gracias a la orientación de mi mentor, informarme sobre los próximos pasos en la universidad y los procesos de obtención de licencias, ¡estoy decidiendo ir a la universidad para convertirme en educadora!”

Emily García de Capital High School confirmó sus aspiraciones profesionales a través de su experiencia de pasantía. “Mientras hacía una pasantía en Creative Startups, pude aprender de manera práctica sobre el espíritu empresarial y los procesos de creación de empresas”, dijo. “También visité la Escuela de Negocios de la UNM. ¡Estas experiencias confirmaron mis objetivos de convertirme en propietario de un negocio!”

El programa WBL planea expandir sus ofertas de pasantías a otras escuelas secundarias de SFPS en 2023-24 y espera recibir a más de 150 pasantes junior y senior.

The Governor's Mansion was the setting on Friday, May 12th for the combined prom for Desert Sage Academy and Early College Opportunities High School (ECO). Hosted by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and her staff were 99 students attending the first-ever prom for both schools. Capital High School seniors on Friday, May 12th participated in "College Ready, Career Bound" day, a celebration of their commitment to postsecondary, trade, military or career pursuits.

Frank S. Ortiz Park in Santa Fe is home to a stone marker, placed there on April 20, 2002, commemorating the Santa Fe Internment Camp. Established in March 1942, the camp, located on the site of the present Casa Solana neighborhood, interned over 4,500 Japanese immigrant men during WWII. The marker memorializes "the experience of thousands of Japanese immigrants and American-born citizens unjustly incarcerated there between 1942 and 1946."

El parque Frank S. Ortiz en Santa Fe alberga un marcador de piedra, colocado allí el 20 de abril de 2002, en conmemoración del campo de internamiento de Santa Fe.
