Wellesley Books Newsletter | May 24th, 2023
Hot bookseller take: May is actually the most wonderful time of the year. As we celebrate and honor our recent and soon-to-be graduates, as well as our educators, we have a little more time and space to ponder and peruse than is sometimes available during that other festive season. It's hard to feel down when the sky stays bright until 8, the days are warm, and families are celebrating the next chapter in students' lives.

May is also Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The last several years have seen a hard-won expansion in the variety of stories being published by Asian Americans, particularly for children, and we're happy to be able to share some of these books with you. Please stop by through the end of the month to take a look at our AAPI Heritage Month tables, and keep reading for a selection of books from those displays.

Saturday, June 3rd at 4:30 PM (in-person)
T.J. Newman, author of Falling, joins us to discuss her new thriller, Drowning. Six minutes after takeoff, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. During the evacuation, an engine explodes and the plane is flooded. Drowning is an unforgettable thriller about a family’s desperate fight to save themselves and the people trapped with them—against impossible odds.

“Stunning, emotional, and unforgettable. Drowning reads like Apollo 13 underwater.” –Don Winslow, New York Times bestselling author of City on Fire and The Border

T.J. will be in conversation with Hank Phillippi Ryan, author of The House Guest.
Sunday, June 4th from 4-5 PM (in-person)
David A. Kelly, author of the beloved Ballpark Mysteries series, joins us for a Meet & Greet to celebrate baseball season with The Black Cat Change-Up.

The Black Cat Change-Up is ideal for girls and boys in elementary school who love mystery, adventure, real-life situations, or sports.

Monday, June 5th at 7:00 PM (in-person)
Local author Elizabeth Millane joins us to discuss her novel Sixty Blades of Grass.

Inspired by the author’s own family history, this is a riveting, heartrending novel of danger and betrayal that explores what it takes to lay down one’s life for another in the most harrowing of circumstances.

"Elizabeth Millane captures the intensity and relentless danger experienced by those courageous enough to surreptitiously battle the Nazi occupation of Holland in any way that was possible."
–Allan Levine, author
Tuesday, June 6th at 10:00 AM (in-person)
Lisa Varchol Perron joins us for Storytime with the Author to share two of her picture books: My Love for You, about parents' undying love for their children; and Patterns Everywhere, about discovering patterns in the natural world.
Tuesday, June 6th at 7:00 PM (in-person)
Local author Brian McMahon joins us to discuss his new novel, The Fall Will Probably Kill You! (a love story).

"'Love is leverage.' You’ll chew on those words long after the pulsating final scene in The Fall Will Probably Kill You! (a love story). In fact, I found it impossible not to circle back and wonder who was in control after all in this mesmerizing, twisty tale of political ambition and fixation on love."
–L.D., reader

Brian will be in conversation with Eileen McNamara, author of Eunice, the Kennedy Who Changed the World.
Bookseller Recommendations
Jerry recommends:
The Wager by David Grann
A fascinating, little-known true story of an 18th-century British sailing expeditionary force gone wrong. The story focuses on one ship, the Wager, as the expedition goes from bad to worse during the journey around Cape Horn. This is a story of hardship, interpersonal battles, resilience and the intricacies of 18th-century maritime law. A real page-turner and a remarkable true story!
Elle recommends:
Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
A biting satire of the publishing industry and a must-read for anyone interested in that world! This book is like a car wreck you can't look away from. Cringe as the main character makes the worst decisions known to man over and over again. Still, you won't be able to put this book down!
Tracy A. recommends:
Games and Rituals by Katherine Heiny
There is so much humanity on display in this short story collection. Stories range from tending to aging parents to peacefully interacting with your ex (and/or your partner's ex) to parenting teenagers to internet sleuthing to find out if you are being cheated on to having your home Marie Kondo'ed against your will. There isn't a dud in the bunch. The complexity and messiness of a variety of relationships is explored and written about in beautiful, concise language. Well done!

Bookseller Recommendations for Young Readers
Colleen L. recommends:
You: The Story by Ruta Sepetys
This is an excellent resource for any aspiring author! Sepetys uses her own story and shows readers how to craft their writing through memories. Therefore, this book reads like a memoir as the author walks you through all stages of the writing process. The format helps the story flow as well as making it easy to flip back and forth amongst great snippets--fun facts to research further and springboard your own writing, writing exercises, and additional resources, for example. I highly recommend adding this book to any home or classroom library (middle school or high school). It was fun to learn of Sepetys’ life experiences and how she came to be a writer of young adult historical fiction. She is a master of her craft! Grab this book and check it out!

In the Gift Department
Those of us who are prone to burning know the importance of a good sun hat--and from May through August, hats are a necessity! Ours are reasonably priced and packable, so you can keep a hat by the door, in your car, and in the beach bag. I couldn't resist trying on this fetching pink hat, which was comfortable, adjustable, and made me feel a bit like a turn-of-the-century "girl reporter" about to head off on a fantastic mission.

Sarabi
Sarabi is an eight-and-a-half year-old Mini-Pin/Chihuahua mix from Los Angeles; our Event Coordinator, Ashleigh, shares custody with her mom, Jane, and sister, Alexandra. Sarabi loves her stuffed hedgehog(s), especially ripping out their stuffing; and enrichment games from Outward Hound. She is especially good at zoomies, answers to "Noodle Doodle Doodle Noodle Dog," and is a very good snuggle-buddy.
