Saints Peter and Paul Takes the Trophy Home: A Chat with Players Garrett Hemingway, Braden Smith, and Coach Gary Gould

65dcdeacab223 image

The Saints Peter and Paul Men’s Basketball team, under the leadership of Head Coach Gary Gould, emerged victorious in the MIAA C Conference championship by defeating Beth Tfiloh High School with a score of 68-58 at UMBC on the last Saturday of February. It’s been several years since Saints Peter and Paul won the title, but what made this year’s victory remarkable is that they had been entirely defeated by Beth Tifiloh last year, losing by 30 points.

However, this year’s game was different. Chestertown’s Garrett Hemingway was the leading scorer for the Sabres, scoring 19 points, while Hurlock’s Braden Smith and Robbie Cunningham also scored double-digit point totals, finishing with 13 points each. K’den Spears had 13 Points and 5 rebounds as well.

A Community Lead Revival on Cambridge's Main Street

DSC_0001-scaled image

Recent years have seen a renaissance of sorts in Downtown Cambridge, with new businesses and an emphasis on aesthetics. Helping to highlight all this is Cambridge Main Street, a volunteer-led nonprofit entity that is getting stronger and more influential after an extended period of relative inactivity.

“The organization is essentially the champion for the downtown area,” said Executive Director Margaret Knudsen, whose office is located in the Chamber of Commerce on High Street.

Cambridge Main Street champions the downtown by amplifying businesses through face-to-face events as well as social media and digital marketing to its online audience of roughly 20,000 people. Knudsen and her volunteer team also promote the events others have downtown. Among the upcoming activities is the April 20 fundraiser at 447 Venue, the largest such event for CMS operating funds.

“The bulk of our funding is through grants that we apply for,” Knudsen explained. “So, Spring Fling is an opportunity to be able to raise funds for operations, since operations mainly are in allowable expenses for most grant applications.”

For All Seasons Offers Focused Staff Training All Around Trauma

First-Responders-Staff-Training-1-scaled image

For All Seasons’ Center for Learning has been holding trainings for its staff, focusing on populations who experience trauma such as human trafficking, veterans’ issues, and the stress of being a first responder. Most recently, the Center completed training around the topic of human trafficking. The training, “Polaris Human Trafficking 101,” covered how human trafficking happens, understanding human trafficking victims, and recognizing human trafficking in our communities, as well as featured stories of human trafficking survivors.

The Center for Learning also trained 100% of the For All Seasons team in cultural competency around service members, veterans, and their families. The “Trained Military Assistance Provider (TMAP)” training curriculum covered topics such as healthcare providers, helping children of veterans, and crisis response and suicide among military members and veterans. The course also featured service members and veterans telling their stories of military-related trauma and realizing they needed mental health help. One of the instructors was Dr. Shauna Springer, Senior Director of Suicide Prevention and Postvention Initiatives, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

The first responder training is taught by Jeff Thompson, Ph.D., an Adjunct Associate Research Scientist in the Psychiatry Department at Columbia University Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute. Previously, as a detective with the NYPD, he developed the NYPD’s peer support training. His research includes hostage negotiation in terrorist incidents, suicide prevention, resilience, and the use of effective communication during crisis incidents. Additional guest speakers from other first responder agencies, as well as first responders, will share their own lived experiences with work-related mental health.

UM Shore Regional Health's Heart and Vascular Center Celebrates Cardiac Catheterization Lab Renovations

Cath-Lab-Renovations-FINAL-scaled image

A major renovation project recently completed in one of UM Shore Regional Health’s two cardiac catheterization labs has facilitated state-of-the-art improvements in cardiac care provided at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, which is an accredited Cardiac Intervention Center (CIC). UM SRH is a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).

“The improvements in our cardiac catheterization lab are an investment in the heart health of our region,” said Ken Kozel, UM SRH President and CEO. “These renovations enable our highly skilled cardiology team to continue offering the outstanding cardiac care that our communities have come to expect from UM Shore Regional Health.”

The project, which began in October 2022, included upgrades to the catheterization lab’s fluoroscopy machine (which uses X-ray to allow providers to see within the vessels of the heart in real time in order to diagnose and treat various types of heart disease), repairs to the ductwork and ventilation system, painting, replacing the floors and upgrades to the control room. New technology included in the renovation reduces radiation emissions, which results in a safer work environment for physicians and cardiac catheterization lab team members.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

You can follow activity of the Maryland 2024 Legislative session on this link:

https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Legislation/Charts

The Dorchester Chamber of Commerce, along with a coalition of businesses, local and regional chambers, and associations from across the state, strongly opposes House Bill 1515.

This legislation, titled “Sales and Use Tax — Rate Reduction and Services,” is a misguided attempt to fund legislative priorities through a massive $2.9 billion tax increase on all Maryland residents and businesses.

While HB 1515 proposes lowering the state sales tax from 6% to 5%, it would simultaneously expand the sales tax to a wide variety of everyday services that have never been taxed before, including, but not limited to:

·    Accounting and financial services

·    Child care services

·    Legal and appraisal services

·    Real estate services

·    Shipping and delivery services

·    Transportation, towing, parking, and automotive services

·    Home repair, cleaning, and improvement services

·    Dry cleaning and laundry services

·    Salon and barber shop services

·    Veterinary and pet grooming services

·    Advertising, printing and media streaming services

There is a effort to get the House to issue an unfavorable finding for the bill at Monday's hearing. If that does not happen legislators will need to hear from an even larger group of constituents.

Please watch for eblast from us with more details.

When Wylde Women Dream

For Cambridge artist, Tammy Vitale, things that seem worn, torn or broken to most people are her treasures. She takes these cast offs and dreams up a new life for them by refashioning them into something different and altogether new! Colorful collages and engaging mixed media art pieces come to life under her skilled and creative hands. For March and April Tammy will be showing her collages and mixed media work along with pieces of her beadwork jewelry at the Main Street Gallery where she will be a guest artist. alongside the work of the gallery’s nine member artists.

When asked about the creative spelling of wylde, Tammy explained that she was part of a coop gallery in Southern Maryland where the women artists called themselves “wylde women” to express their open and experimental approach to their art. Wild became wylde to differentiate the word from meanings that might come up in an online search.

When Wylde Women Dream will open on February 29 and run through April 28. Gallery hours are Thursdays through Sundays from 11-4pm through March and 11-5 starting in April. Two Second Saturday artist receptions are planned for March 9 and April13 from 5-8pm. Tammy will be giving a brief artist talk at 6 pm at the April reception. Both receptions are free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. The gallery asks that children under 18 be accompanied by an adult. Tammy will also be giving a fun, family friendly workshop on making tiny totems on Saturday March 2 from noon to 4 pm at the gallery. All are invited to attend.

Main Street Gallery is located at 518 Poplar St. in Cambridge, and is part of the vibrant Arts and Entertainment District. The gallery is currently reviewing work from prospective members and guest artists. Please contact MSG through its website https://www.mainstgallery.net or by phoning 410-330-4659 if interested.

Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.

TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.

Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.

The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.

Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.
