Presented by Marianne Grogan, president, Coda Ventures, and Greg Watson, chief marketing officer, America's Newspapers.

The Local Newspaper Survey, to which 5,000 Americans responded, covers four topic areas: (1) How Americans use and access local news, (2) how Americans engage with newspapers, (3) public notices and (4) consumer purchase behavior across 40+ advertising categories.
Just two weeks remain for submitting entries for editorial writing and commentary awards
Separate judging categories for small and large papers
$15,000 in cash prizes to be awarded
Honor your best editorial writers and columnists by nominating them for this year’s Carmage Walls Commentary Prize.

This contest is open to all members of America’s Newspapers — both daily and non-daily papers — and with circulation breakouts for smaller newspapers (under 35,000 circulation) and larger papers (over 35,000 circulation).

Editorials and columns will be judged separately — with one set of awards presented for excellence in editorial writing (representing the view of the newspaper) and another set of awards for excellence in column writing (columns written by one or more individuals).

In each of those contests, entries will be judged in two circulation brackets: over 35,000 circulation and under 35,000 circulation. And, three cash prizes will be included in each bracket — giving 12 individuals the opportunity to win cash prizes in 2023 (up from four cash prizes in 2022).

Cash prizes will be awarded in the following brackets:
·    Editorials (over 35,000 circulation)
·    Editorials (under 35,000 circulation)
·    Columns (over 35,000 circulation)
·    Columns (under 35,000 circulation)

Cash awards will be as follows in each of the four contest brackets: first-place, $2,250; second-place, $1,000; and third-place, $500. This puts total cash prizes at $15,000 — thanks to the generous support of Lissa Walls Cribb and Southern Newspapers, Inc.

In addition to the top three in each bracket, America's Newspapers also will be recognizing additional finalists.

This contest has always sought to recognize strong, courageous and positive editorial page leadership. Judges will be taking the courage it took to write the editorials or columns into highest consideration.

Here's what we're reading ...
What this longtime crime reporter says the news media gets wrong in covering tragedy

The wave of violence across Canada and the U.S., including two mass shootings in Texas in two weeks with young children among victims, is enough to make the average news consumer feel overwhelmed and anxious.

So how does media coverage of violent crime affect survivors and victims’ families? And how are emergency first responders and journalists faring — people who don’t have the option of turning off the screen?

In some cases, as author and veteran crime reporter Tamara Cherry found after years of research, survivors value media coverage as a way to seek justice or raise awareness about issues such as impaired driving or gun control.

But in many other cases, survivors and families want newsrooms to rethink their desire for information and emotional “sound bites” from people in the immediate aftermath of the worst events of their lives.

‘Show up’: Why (and how) journalists should respond to reader comments

Your article has been published and shared widely. The comments section is lighting up. Do you respond?

Engaging with reader comments might not be high on every journalist’s priority list, but it’s an important part of building trust and community. By responding to comments, journalists can continue the conversation, answer follow-up questions, and even combat mis-or disinformation.

We asked Joy Mayer, director of Trusting News, to share best practices for journalists when responding to comments online.
