The Pleasures of Poetry Workshop
Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 11:00am - 2:00pm, Palmer Library
Harry Griswold is continuing to resurrect his poetry-writing workshop which met a long time on our campus before the pandemic. New, interested writers are welcome regardless of experience. We will pursue contemporary American-style poetry, rather than classic rhyming style. What’s important are well-chosen details and sincerely-conveyed feelings.

In the week following each meeting Harry oversees an email exchange of poems and helpful critiques by all participants. For more details or questions please contact Harry at griswold@san.rr.com.

Be A Candle of Care
Pastoral Care is a core component of our beloved community as it strengthens the meaning and experience of community. Every caring action is a compassionate action. We can all participate in caring for our community through a variety of compassionate actions. Here are some ways you can be a “Candle of Care”:
- Offering to bring food to someone in need
- Send a “caring card”
- Visit someone who is experiencing a challenging time
- Make a phone call to express your care
- Offer transportation to Sunday services or for essential appointments (e.g. medical)
- Give a hug (when appropriate)
The Pastoral Care Committee invites UUFSD members and friends to consider joining our new Elder Companions Team. With support from the Pastoral Care committee members, the Companion Team member offers compassionate support and companionship; help with transportation to essential services, including Sunday services and other events at UUFSD; and connection to resources for elders in the larger community.
If you would like to participate in UUFSD’s Pastoral Care program please contact pastoralcare@uufsd.org

A letter from Rev. Tania Y Márquez
On Behalf of UUA President nominee, Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt
The next UUA Presidential election will take place during the UUA General Assembly (June 21-25, 2023). And Rev. Betancourt is hoping that your congregation will engage in the process. While Rev. Betancourt is running without opposition, she is determined to reach out to every UUA congregation because “the democratic process at the heart of our tradition is not simply about the vote - it is also about the engagement and conversations that precede that vote.”
We hope that your congregation will get to know Rev. Betancourt and her priorities. You’re invited to attend a Presidential Forum on June 3 either online or on location.
We also hope that your congregation delegates will attend the General Assembly and participate in the election - either in person or virtually. Please see Rev. Betancourt’s delegate guide - a great resource for congregations making decisions about General Assembly participation.
But, most importantly, we hope that you will feel a sense of care and connection with the larger UU world - Rev. Betancourt is committed to strengthening these bonds during her campaign, and in the years ahead.
I’m personally available to you to answer questions about the upcoming election and to connect you with Rev. Dr. Betancourt’s campaign, so please feel free to reach out to me at any time at revtaniamarquez@gmail.com

All-Church Camp Invitation from First Church
Camp de Benneville Pines, June 2 - 4, 2023
Hello Regional Colleagues,
Each year, Chalice & 1st UU team up to host an All-Church Camp at Camp de Beneville Pines. This year, Camp will be June 2nd - 4th, and we'd like to extend an invitation to all the congregations in the region to join us. We'll take care of all the planning, preparation, and any costs other than individual registrations. More info and the registration form can be found here: https://www.firstuusandiego.org/all-church-camp.html
I'm aware that this has been a challenging time and that many congregations are struggling to find the funds and enough participants to provide meaningful programming. In addition to Camp, we host a monthly Adult RE Series on that that is 100% on Zoom, and a monthly UU Seniors group that is also available to attend via Zoom. Feel free to tap into any/all of our programs if you find them helpful in supplementing your individual congregation's programs.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Tony Bianca, tony@firstuusandiego.org
