We're Celebrating National Scavenger Hunt Day with a Fun Hunt Around the County!
Tomorrow, May 24, join us for a fun scavenger hunt around the county to find goodies we've hidden at various locations in all of the districts. A little birdie told us to pay close attention to our park and library facilities.

Here's some more hints:
  • Our goodies are likely to be found in places where you can also find a good book to read.
  • Government workers may come across some of these while they’re out getting their steps in.
  • These goodies may brighten the day of someone leaving a local hospital.
  • While soaking up some rays at your local park, you may find a little treat.

If you find something, make sure to tag us on our social media channels and use #cfieldscavengerhunt, or private message us, or email us so that we can share your findings!!

Join the Chesterfield Historical Society for an Interactive Performance of the 1773 Baptist Preacher Trial on Sunday, June 4
As part of the county’s celebration of the coming 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia will be holding an interactive performance on Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at the Historic 1917 Courthouse of the 1773 Baptist Preacher Trial.

In partnership with the Chesterfield County 250th Revolutionary War Committee, this event will allow attendees to experience the trial that led Americans on the path toward religious freedom:

“The year is 1773, a minister must obtain an official license from British Crown authorities to preach in public. Archibald Cary, the magistrate of Chesterfield County, is arresting individuals who openly break this law. Citizens across the countryside begins to question the Crown’s authority to regulate religious teachings.”

Registration is required due to limited seating. Because the Historic 1917 Courthouse is an active court, a headcount with names of those attending is required for this historically-accurate portrayal.

Those interested in attending or those who have questions should contact the Chesterfield Historical Society at (804) 796-7121 or via email at admin@chesterfieldhistory.com

Learn About Opportunities to Comment
on Draft of New Zoning Ordinance
In fall 2019, Chesterfield issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking the services of qualified professionals to assist the county in a comprehensive rewrite of its Zoning Ordinance, Chapter 19.1 of the Chesterfield County Code. The Zoning Ordinance serves as the primary tool to implement the Comprehensive Plan.

While the Comprehensive Plan itself has changed over time to reflect the growth and development vision for county, much of the core content of the current Zoning Ordinance remains unchanged since the 1970s. A comprehensive rewrite is under way to fully implement the future vision.

Be Mindful of Local Ordinances Regarding Recreational Vehicles
Did you know? Recreational equipment, such as fifth wheel trailers, campers and boats may be parked on residential property subject to certain rules.

Parking of this type of equipment is limited to the rear yard area of a lot. Also, some homeowners’ associations have their own rules that govern the parking and storage of recreational equipment.
If You Have a Random Act of Kindness
Story, Please Share it With Us
Random acts of kindness take place around the county every day – and we want to hear about (and celebrate) them. Whether it’s paying it forward in the coffee shop line, or having kindness shown from a friend or stranger, stories of kindness can spread far and wide.

This initiative is focused on celebrating all of the thoughtful things citizens are already doing for each other, while also encouraging you to go out and do something kind for a friend, family member, neighbor, coworker or even someone you have never met before.

Concerned About Lead Paint in Your Home? Apply for Free Assessment and Abatement Program
A child’s brain grows rapidly during the first five years of life. Research shows lead exposure can harm a child’s health and brain development.

Children can be directly exposed to this hazard if they live in an older home that contains old lead-based paint, typically built before 1978. Lead-based paint can peel and crack into tiny pieces creating dust that children breath in or swallow.

Fortunately, lead exposure is preventable.

Chesterfield County’s Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Program was created to protect children five years and younger and expectant mothers from lead exposure. In partnership with our non-profit partner, project:HOMES, families may qualify for a free lead hazard assessment and household repairs to remove lead exposure from their homes. No county staff will enter your home. This program has serviced several homes and is currently repairing others in Chesterfield that have lead-based paint.

If you’re a caregiver of younger children in an older home, you may also qualify for this program. For more information, please contact Emily Hurley by emailing Emily.Hurley@projecthomes.org or calling 804-718-0517.

Updates from Chesterfield County Public Schools
Graduates with Green Thumbs
During Chesterfield County Public Schools high school graduations, a handful of the 4,700+ graduating seniors will leave green thumbprints on every ceremony.

In a yearlong project under the guidance of teacher Trista Grigsby, seniors in the urban agriculture and plant systems program at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center @ Courthouse grew the beautiful ferns that will adorn the stage of every CCPS graduation at the VCU Siegel Center.

Growing ferns for graduations included watering them during winter and spring breaks, troubleshooting and developing care protocols to manage potential pests. As the urban agriculture students cross the stage to receive their diplomas, the ferns will be an extra achievement to take pride in during a milestone day of their scholastic journeys.

Details about Chesterfield County graduations (including streaming links) are available online: https://oneccps.org/chesterfield-county-high-schools-to-graduate-may-22-26-2/. Nine graduations will take place May 22-24 at Virginia Commonwealth University, and two graduations will take place May 26 at Virginia State University.
One Step, One Day, One Success at a Time

Virginia’s first recovery high school program celebrated a successful first year during a May 18 completion ceremony. With families and other supporters in attendance, therapy dog Lettie led students into the ceremony. A total of 12 students completed the 2022-23 school year at Chesterfield Recovery Academy, and two of those students completed their high school diploma requirements and will graduate with their high school classes later this month.

With the philosophy “One step, one day, one success at a time,” Chesterfield Recovery Academy serves high school students from central Virginia who are recovering from drug addiction. The program is a collaboration among 15 localities, the commonwealth of Virginia and community partners.

Superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools Merv Daugherty noted that Chesterfield Recovery Academy opened just 10 months ago and is now a role model for the rest of Virginia. Dr. Daugherty said, “We are very proud of what we’ve been able to do to help students. We’re excited about what the future holds for the students. … Today we get a chance to shake your hand as you walk across the stage and thank you for being willing to take the next step forward.”
