Floyd fans 17 and Beloso’s HR in 11th gives LSU a 4-3 win over Florida in Game 1 of the CWS finals
Pat McEvoy manager of Rocco’s Pizza and home of the Jell-O shot challenge in Ohama, said he along with his staff were thrilled. He said having LSU in the championship round translates into a larger amount of money being spent over the weekend.
“And ultimately the difference it makes in how much money we raise for charity through our little Jell-O Shot Challenge idea is immense,” said McEvoy.
McEvoy said LSU fans definitely make their mark at the College World Series. He’s warned this staff that if they think the past week has been busy, things are about to go up a notch.
“I’m like oh we’re about to get a whole lot of new blood coming up for the championship. There’s going to be some fresh bodies coming up now. Some of the staff, me included are walking around like zombies just in it for so long,” said McEvoy.
And McEvoy said he’s planning on having t-shirts made with the final tally of the Jell-o shot challenge.

Sam Sprouts is a small farm that produces a variety of cleaned, dehulled, spin dried and carefully packaged hydroponic sprouts, fresh cut varieties of microgreens, and seasonal produce. He has now been in business for a decade and grows at least an acre or two of gardens every year. Sam has a passion for helping people and aims to inspire new young farmers in the industry. GLOBAL BEATLES DAY
June 25 is a day someone may want to hold your hand and ask you to please, please be true because they love you yeah, yeah, yeah. Global Beatles Day or GBD commemorates The Beatles music and their shake-up of the music world.
Some of the dates that mark the Beatles development until that 1967 broadcast on the program “Our World:”
- 1957 – teenager John Lennon performs with the Quarrymen perform and then brings in Paul McCartney who was 15 at the time.
- 1960 – the group first played together publicly in Hamburg, West Germany for 48 nights before moving to another venue. George Harrison was deported for being under 18 and not having a work permit to perform.
- 1960 – May, the band changes their name to the Silver Beatles.
- 1960 – August, the Silver Beatles change their name to the Beatles.
- 1960 – April, bass guitarist turned painter Stuart Sutcliffe dies of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 21. In August, Ringo Starr is invited to join the group permanently. Interim drummer Pete Best is fired the next day.
- 1962 – The Beatles’ released their first single, “Love Me Do,” a number one hit in the USA.
- 1963 – The Beatles first album, “Please Please Me” was released. It was followed that same year by the release of the album “With The Beatles.”
- 1964 – The album “Introducing The Beatles,” and “Meet The Beatles” were released within days of each other. Then “Twist and Shout” is released followed by “The Beatles Second Album,” and “A Hard Day’s Night.”
- 1965 – “Help” and “Rubber Soul” were released.
- 1966 – “Revolver” was released.
- 1967 – “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” is released. One month later, June 25, The Beatles perform their song “All You Need is Love” on the BBC program Our World.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”
The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.
Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

The doors officially opened to a large crowd Friday morning for the grand opening of the Traintastic Interactive Model Railroad Museum in Gulfport.
Traintastic is now open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On Sunday, June 25, the incomparable Phillip Manuel will provide an Unforgettable Evening in the beautiful BK House Salon with music that crosses genres without missing a beat. The 6 pm concert will feature an assortment of favorites, including songs made famous by Nat King Cole and the Beatles. July 6 will bring a special Evening of Absinthe with journalist and author Marielle Songy, highlighting her book The Absinthe Frappe, and complemented by a sampling of Jade Nouvelle-Orléans Absinthe Supérieure, courtesy of Ted A. Breaux of Jade Liqueurs, LLC.
Songy’s presentation will examine the history of absinthe, its origins, and its influences, culminating in the story of the iconic New Orleans cocktail. The audience will learn how bartender Cayetano Ferrér invented the concoction as she delves into the early days of the drink and its first home, the Old Absinthe House in the Crescent City. She will explore the ban on absinthe in the United States and Europe and the misguided reasoning behind it, all in the context of New Orleans’s response to national Prohibition more broadly. Finally, Songy will discuss the lifting of the restrictions on absinthe in 2007, a move largely spearheaded by New Orleans scientist and master distiller Theodore Breaux, who dispelled long-held notions that the Green Fairy invariably drove its connoisseurs to madness.

National Strawberry Parfait Day on June 25th comes around each year during the perfect time – peak strawberry season.
In fact, parfait is French for perfect. The traditional parfait is a dessert of ice cream or frozen custard layered with fruit and whipped cream in a tall stemmed glass. An additional topping of whipped cream garnishes the dessert. Today, we often replace the ice cream with yogurt or pudding and layers of granola.

On the corner of Chartres and St. Ann Streets is a building steeped in history dating back to 1743 when it was the home of Jean Baptiste Destrehan, the Royal Treasurer of the French Colonies. It was severely damaged in the fire of 1788 and rebuilt, and was later owned by Julien Poydras and Theodore Leveau. In 1916 the building was purchased by Frank Taormina who converted it into a pasta factory and grocery (pictured here in 1939). In 1974 it became a Chart House restaurant and today we know it as Muriel's. This picture reminds us that the French Quarter was first and foremost a neighborhood chock full of immigrants who helped build our great city.

At the bottom left is the old entrance to Metairie Cemetery on the corner. Above that at the top left is Greenwood Cemetery. Running down the center of the image from top to bottom is the extension of City Park Avenue from the terminus at Canal Street to where the train overpass horizontally intersects the photograph.
Also under construction is the Pontchartrain Expressway built on top of the recently filled in New Basin Canal. Just to the right of center is the Half-Way House then the Cypress Grove Cemetery and Charity Hospital Cemetery.
The building at the bottom center used to be an Reith Florist shop that had been at that location since 1916 until 1986 after which it was converted into the Bayou Ridge Café. It is now occupied by a Zea Rotisserie Restaurant & Bar at 5080 Pontchartrain Boulevard.

HEAT ADVISORY ISSUED IN CITY OF NEW ORLEANS FOR
City of New Orleans Opens Emergency Cooling Centers As Excessive Heat Warning Continues
NEW ORLEANS —The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the second consecutive day on Saturday, June 17. The weather forecast indicates that high humidity levels will result in heat index values – that is, temperatures that “feel like” degrees in New Orleans – of 108-116 degrees, while overnight heat indices range between 86-93 degrees.
EMERGENCY COOLING CENTERS
In coordination with the New Orleans Health Department and New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, the City of New Orleans is coordinating the use of three New Orleans Recreation Development facilities as “emergency cooling centers” that allow individuals to seek respite from the dangerously hot temperatures. The following locations will be available from Sunday and Monday, June 18-19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:
- Joe Brown Recreation Center, 5601 Read Blvd.
- Rosenwald Recreation Center, 1120 S. Broad Ave.
- Morris FX Jeff Park, 2529 General Meyer Ave.
HYDRATION STATIONS
NOLA Ready is working with the New Orleans Fire Department to set-up hydration stations in areas with limited resources. Individuals in need of water and sunscreen are encouraged to stop by the following locations from Saturday-Monday, June 17-19, between 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.:

- NOFD Squirt 04, 6900 Downman Rd.

Earlier this week, the City of New Orleans launched the NOLA Ready Heat Relief Map, which can be found at ready.nola.gov. This interactive map lists locations with free water and free, indoor air-conditioned locations for the general public. Individuals in need of heat relief should check this interactive map for updated information on hydration stations or cooling centers.
Businesses or organizations that are willing to act as a free community cooling site should email ready@nola.gov with the address, dates, and hours to be added to the map.

SUSPENSION OF SERVICE DISCONNECTIONS
Entergy New Orleans does not disconnect on days that the National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, which is expected to last through June 20, 2023. SAFETY TIPS
These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit weatherwise.nola.gov to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities. Residents are advised to take the following precautions to prevent health emergencies due to overexposure to extreme heat:
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside
- When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening
- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1
- Children and pets should never be left unattended in a vehicle. Even in 70-degree weather, the interior temperature of a vehicle can increase rapidly to over 100 degrees in just 20 minutes. Cracking a window does not help
- Leaving a child or pet unattended in a vehicle often leads to a life-threatening emergency. Anyone who sees a child or animal unattended in a vehicle is urged to call 9-1-1 immediately

Audubon’s Cool Zoo
Starting on May 29, the water park will be open daily until Aug. 5, when returns to weekends-only operation. The park closes for the season in September.
The details
Audubon Zoo guests will be able to cool off twice a day at the water park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. each day. The Cool Zoo closes every day from 1 to 2 p.m. for cleaning and maintenance.
All the fan-favorite features will be there: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes and shady spots for adults.
The Gator Run lazy river offers visitors the option to cool down by floating atop a tube along a 750-foot long course that is 3-feet deep and 10-feet wide. It also features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to spray other visitors as they float on down the river. It also includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.
Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run, and anyone shorter than 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.
Outside food and drinks are welcomed in both Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of the zoo's animals. Audubon may search coolers.

Cool Zoo tickets can be purchased online and at the zoo's front gate. Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $9 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $12 for non-members, plus Audubon Zoo admission.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

June 27- Bootid Meteor Shower Maximum
June’s Bootid meteor shower begins on June 22, but it is expected to reach its peak rate of meteors around 7 PM EDT on June 27. The Bootid meteors should be visible when the constellation Bootes is just above the horizon. The moon will be in its first quarter phase at the shower’s peak, and will set at about 1:30 in the morning, making for minimal light interference later in the night.
June’s Bootid meteor shower was created by the comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke and expected to last until July 2.
The same skygazing rules that apply to pretty much all space-watching activities are key this month: Go to a dark spot away from the lights of a city or town and let the eyes adjust to the darkness for about a half an hour. Then, just sit back and let the summer skies dazzle.

Wine tastings go pro at Commander’s Palace
A summer program at Commander’s Palace, 1403 Washington Ave., (504) 899-8221, gives wine lovers a chance to sample a range of wines like a pro.
The events, called CP Sips, turn a portion of the Garden District restaurant into a self-guided tour of offerings from different distributors, and people can order more of the ones they liked best to have at home later. Each includes 40 or so wines, and also cheeses and small tastes from the kitchen.
Dan Davis, the resident “wine guy” at Commander’s Palace, works with seven distributors and local retailer Swirl Wine Bar and Market to make sure wines served at the tasting are available for people to find again.
The June 28 edition has crisp summer choices, the July 26 event is focused on California wines and Aug. 30 brings wines from across the Mediterranean. All are from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Burgundy icons have launched projects in Oregon, and super-Tuscan legends have been working the land in Argentina’s Patagonia region. And lately, French winemakers are foraying into South African wine country. Though the climates—and terroirs—may be wildly different, established French vintners are currently creating some of South Africa’s most exciting wines.
Today it goes further than that, as large French wine businesses are beginning to invest heavily in South African wine estates. Why? What are they finding there that you should know too? Well, Dr Edo Heyns, director and head of strategic development for Advini, a French wine company, will be with us on Friday, June 23rd to discuss what this French heritage and modern investment mean for the world of fine wines. With almost 5000 miles of coastline, the country produces a treasure trove sea inspired whites like Albarino, an aromatic wine with crisp acidity, vibrant citrus flavors, and notes of stone fruits; Godello, known for its elegance and versatility; Hondarrabi Zuri, light-bodied with a vibrant and zesty character, making them perfect for warm weather and pairing with seafood -and many more. And even red grapes like Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mencia and Monastrell in the right hands can all produce wines with lower tannins, lighter body, and vibrant fruit. Just back from my most recent trip to Provence, I'm always inspired to educate people on the many wine treasures the region has to offer. Provence has the quintessential Mediterranean climate - warm sunny days followed by cool nights with very little rain during the summer months. Mistral winds and sea breezes keep the humidity level to an almost arid dryness making it the ideal climate for grape growing. While everyone knows Provence for its lovely rosé, the refreshing whites and full-bodied reds are often overlooked. 2023 Spring Concert Series
Music lovers are invited to City Park for the popular Thursdays at Twilight concert series. Bring your friends and enjoy mint juleps and array of musicians indoors at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters (1 Victory Avenue, NOLA 70124). Admission is $15. Cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks, water, and food available for purchase. No outside food, drink or pets allowed.

Launched in 2019, P.O.W.E.R. Plates is a month-long celebration of women in hospitality produced by Fidelity Bank's P.OW.E.R. Program. P.O.W.E.R. Plates' goal is to raise awareness of, and drive business to, women-led restaurants in the New Orleans & Baton Rouge region. Women-led restaurants, bars, hotels and Fidelity Bank P.O.W.E.R. members from across the region can participate to benefit the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation (LHF) which supports Louisiana's hospitality industry workers in crisis through emergency relief funding. Celebrate Independence Day on the Mandeville Lakefront

The free event includes a patriotic tribute, music by Rockin’ Dopsie, Jr., kids tent and photo booth. This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning and how some of their most famous poems demonstrate an increasing fascination with the human psyche during the 19th century. Attendees will explore how Tennyson's and Browning's Victorian-era works address how loss, grief, depression, and even sociopathy might manifest in the minds of their poetic speakers.

This lecture will cover the English Victorian poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti and their contributions to the English sonnet tradition. Attendees will explore how Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese and Rossetti's Monna Innominata are groundbreaking sonnet sequences which offer women's voices responding to and reimagining the sonnet traditions named for Petrarch and Shakespeare.
Dr. Cognevich has a master's in English literature from the University of New Orleans and a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University. She taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. Her doctoral thesis focused on the late-18th-century British sonnet revival and poet Charlotte Smith, who was one of William Wordsworth's early inspirations.

The New Orleans Saints will begin their 57th NFL season on July 24 when the team's veteran players report to training camp at the team’s training facility in Metairie, multiple sources said this week.
The team's rookies will report the previous week.
An official announcement by the team with practice times and availability to the public is expected to be made at a later date.
The Saints will conduct their official conditioning test July 25 and conduct noncontact practices in jerseys and helmets for the next two days, as mandated by the NFL’s official ramp-up period. The team will practice in helmets and shells on July 28-29 and move to full pads on July 31 after an off day in the schedule.
In Week 2 of their exhibition schedule, the Saints will conduct joint practices against the Los Angeles Chargers. The workouts will be Aug. 17-18 at the Chargers training camp site in Costa Mesa, California.
The Saints will practice against the Houston Texans from Aug. 24-25 in Metairie before the teams’ final preseason game on Aug. 27. These practices will not be open to the public.

Annual event to be held at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to serve as a major fundraiser for the Brees Dream Foundation
Brittany and Drew Brees announced today the creation of The NOLA Pickleball Fest, an annual event benefiting the Brees Dream Foundation. The inaugural event will be held August 10-13, 2023, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Brees and the staff of the Brees Dream Foundation have been working closely with local tourism leaders at the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, and New Orleans & Company, as well as national companies Joola and The Kitchen, to organize all aspects of the event.
