There is No Place Like Home
By Matt Tapscott

My mother was a 'stay-at-home' mom. With six siblings in the mix (two older and three younger than me) she was in every sense a 'working mother.' Over the past 30-plus years, 15 as a director of child care centers and 17 as an in-home provider of a child development program, I have come to appreciate just how hard my 'stay-at-home' mother worked. Daily, for years, and often with little recognition, Mom did the real work of making our house a home, while a group of young children was always present. Add cousins, neighbor kids, and school friends - the house was always busy. To be clear: our home and our family was no feel-good television sitcom. This was real life and like many families 'life-as-family' had its challenges. Also for clarity, this is no nostalgic walk down memory lane debating a return to the 'good ol' days.' This article is what a professional child care provider learned about learning while being cared for at home, with intention, and how I have applied that experience to my work with children today.
In the home-based early learning program I own and operate (Almost Home Early Learning) the seven children in my care (ages 6 months to 4 years) and I make pancakes from scratch at least weekly for breakfast or 'breakfast-lunch.' We do this, not only because we love hotcakes, but as a provider of quality child care I know when we wash our hands, measure ingredients, count out mixing bowls and utensils, combine the ingredients, and observe the baking process, incredible learning takes place. Making pancakes also makes for a great tradition, important in our 'family.' When we harvest pumpkins that were planted as seeds months earlier, we explore language, nature, science, and the lifecycle. In placing books on bookshelves children can reach independently, I am intentionally introducing and supporting a lifetime love of reading.
Real 'school readiness' is best realized with such intentional choices in developmentally appropriate early childhood care. And all of these 'activities' occur in our 110-year-old family home in rural Iowa. And just as my caregiver did for me when I was young, I want the children in my care to be in an environment that is relaxed and ebbs and flows with their developmental clocks. I intentionally provide a home for children who are in child care when they cannot be in their own homes. With over 70 percent of parents in the workforce nationally, I appreciate how children benefit greatly from the option of in-home care.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) is conducting unannounced inspections to increase safety and the integrity of the ERDC program. At this time the inspections will focus on licensed child providers that receive subsidy payment on behalf of an ERDC family.

The inspections include:

  • Ensuring health and safety requirements are met;,and,
  • Providing clarification and on-the-spot coaching on DHS procedures.

Oregon Research Institute Message regarding a Research Study for Lane County

Attention Child Care Providers;
We would like to share a parenting support resource to which you can refer families of children in your child care.
We are conducting an exciting and important research study at Oregon Research Institute (ORI) in which we are evaluating a high quality evidence-based parenting support program with families in Lane County. The scientists leading the study are Carol W. Metzler, PhD and Julie C. Rusby, PhD.
The Success for Children and Families Project at ORI is available to parents of 3-7 year old children who are having difficulties with misbehavior. If the family qualifies for participation in the study, the parents receive the highly acclaimed Triple P-Positive Parenting Program to help them improve their child's behavior and increase their confidence in parenting. Parents learn how to solve challenging problems with their child's behavior and prevent future problems before they arise. The program is provided free of charge, and families receive up to $90 in gift cards and cash for participating.
If you have families who you think could benefit from parenting support, you can refer them to our project.

QRIS CORNER
Since 2013, Oregon's QRIS has been in a field test and based upon the data gathered and the feedback from participants, Western Oregon University (WOU) is now starting on a full revision. What does that mean if you've started the process?

Here's the timeline for the current QRIS materials:

Spring 2016: Solution-focused feedback sessions, March 28th in Eugene.
Summer 2016: Continue to work on quality improvement goals. If you've started a Portfolio, stay in touch with your Quality Improvement Specialist to get the most up-to-date information and support.
Fall 2016: Make final revisions to your Portfolio. Get an updated QRIS Personnel Qualifications report from your Quality Improvement Specialist.
Winter 2016: All Portfolios must be postmarked no later than 12/31/16.
Celebrate your work in documenting quality!
Do you know a child that exhibits these behaviors?
  • Defiance/Opposition?
  • Sassing/Talking back/Swearing?
  • Tantrums?
  • Self-injurious behavior?
  • Lying/Stealing?
  • Aggression/Destructive Behavior?
  • Hyperactivity?

Options Counseling and Family Services is now offering Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based practice that works with the parent and child together to help decrease the above behaviors while strengthening the parent-child relationship. Parents are coached on how to use PCIT (labeled praise, attunement, self esteem enhancement skills, active listening and reflection) in the moment through the use of a one-way mirror and wireless earphone. PCIT is designed for children between the ages of two and seven who have a parent/caregiver who is able to participate with them in weekly sessions.

Included is a flyer for more information about PCIT. If you know a child/family that may benefit from this service please encourage them to call Options Counseling and Family Services at our Springfield office. 541-762-1971, or the Eugene office at 541-687-6983.
