Dear Friends,

What is your favorite way to celebrate your birthday? Do you like having a large gathering of friends and family—for an evening or perhaps an entire weekend? Do you prefer to have a quiet dinner with just one or two of the people who are dearest to you? Or a loud dinner and dancing with one or two of your closest friends or immediate family members?

Do you prefer a surprise celebration or one that you have a part in planning? How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

This coming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the birthday of the Church. Typically, we celebrate with high energy after reading the Book of Acts’ description of the Holy Spirit coming to the waiting disciples with the sound of rushing wind and the appearance of tongues of flame over the disciples’ heads followed by their mad rush onto the street! It’s a great day to get rowdy in church!

And it’s a great day to be still, because there is another Pentecost story told in John’s gospel.  In this story Jesus simply exhales. He breathes the Holy Spirit upon his disciples. No rushing wind, no tongues of flame. No rushing around. Just a simple sigh.

One of the most wonderful and mysterious things about God, is that God doesn’t show up in the same way all the time. The Holy Spirit is given with a flurry of activity and also with an exhale of breath. On Sunday we will celebrate the gift of God’s Spirit who comes to abide with us, albeit in different ways, because God loves us. Whether it’s with a shout or a sigh, it will be a day to celebrate because God has chosen to show up. Come Holy Spirit, come.

God’s grace and peace be with you,

Pastor Kim

P.S. On Pentecost Sunday folks often wear something red to church signifying the tongues of flame. You are invited to wear red this Sunday!

Good News from the trustees

After inspecting the Fellowship Hall east wall and Flora avenue stairwell floor, I can report there is no water on the floors or dampness in the walls.  The landscaping work has made a difference. I'd like to publicly thank Barb Riney for her analysis and solution for this issue.

Thank you...

Thank you!!!

All the sanctuary walls up to the ceiling and both the Flora and Sutton entry ways have been painted. A little patching needed to be done on walls going down to the Fellowship Hall. If you haven't seen the new paint job come Sunday and take a look.

MUMC Children's Ministry

Last week in Children's Sunday School we celebrated Pentecost and learned about the Holy Spirit. This week we are excited to have a special teacher join us. We are going to discuss friends and friendship, the kids will be invited to share their different experiences with friends, and do a craft. We hope you can join us!

Pentecost is called the birthday of the Church. Last Sunday's lesson included a treat celebrating not only the birthday of the Christian Church but also Maplewood UMC 109 years of ministry.
