NYC Department of Youth and Community Development Awards $4.95 Million to Support LaGuardia’s Train and Earn Program

LaGuardia is at the forefront of preparing young New Yorkers to work in the healthcare sector. LaGuardia’s Workforce Education Center (WEC) in the Adult and Continuing Education Division received a new, six-year grant totaling $4.95 million from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) to help LaGuardia establish a Train and Earn Program to provide comprehensive training for out of school and out of work (OSOW) high schoolers in the healthcare sector. “We are grateful for the support from DYCD to help LaGuardia provide access to employment opportunities for today’s youth,” said Kenneth Adams, President of LaGuardia Community College. “This grant will help us create comprehensive pathways for OSOW youth in the healthcare sector by offering training in three of our most successful healthcare certificate programs. We encourage young New Yorkers to dream big, and we welcome them to LaGuardia where they can be successful.”

LaGuardia’s Casa de Las Américas Collaborates with The Climate Museum to Create Pop-Up Exhibition

Climate change is significantly impacting our world by causing rising global temperatures, leading to more extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, floods, and severe storms, among other environmental activities. Casa de las Américas, the Latinx academic and culture center at LaGuardia, recently collaborated with The Climate Museum to present a pop-up version of The End of Fossil Fuel, an exhibition featuring details on how climate change has impacted our world throughout the years. The exhibition will be formally introduced with a program and reception, from 4 to 6 p.m., February 27 in the M-Lobby, where the exhibition is displayed. The pop-up exhibition is an interactive and thought-provoking show designed to spark conversation, action, and hope in the face of the climate crisis. In addition to The Climate Museum, Casa de las Américas collaborated with the NYC Climate Justice Hub, out of the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, and the El Puente: Leaders for Peace and Justice. Dr. Ashley Dawson, author, activist, and professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and the College of Staten Island, is also a featured collaborator who will be showcasing his photos and video from his work on peaking power plants, also known as “peaker” plants.
