Welcome to Summer, Neighbor!
Hi neighbor,

I hope June has brought you lots of sunshine and fun. I want to wish you a happy Pride Month, happy Juneteenth, and happy Longevity Walking!

We started June loudly, proudly, and colorfully at City Hall. Councilmember Pam Foley, Councilmember Omar Torres, Silicon Valley Pride, and I proclaimed June as Pride Month by raising the Pride and Transgender flags and lighting City Hall in rainbow colors. Our LGBTQ+ friends, coworkers, and loved ones must always know we as a city support and encourage them to be their most authentic selves.
This month, we also made large strides towards making San Jose a Blue Zones-certified city through our Longevity Walks. Since April, we have had a total of three Longevity Walks. We walked around Valley Fair, from City Hall to the Billy DeFrank Center, and from City Hall to San Jose State. Our walking groups are getting bigger each time and I am so proud to see how many residents are on board with prioritizing health as a city. Both walking and socializing provide immense benefits for your physical and mental health, so please join me on our fourth Longevity Walk on Wednesday, July 12th as we walk from City Hall to Roy's Station Coffee and Tea in Japantown.

You can view past and upcoming Longevity Walks on my website here. If you ever have any questions about the Walks or Blue Zones in general, please send me an email.

There are many events in this newsletter that you and your loved ones can spend your summer soaking in the sun. Free movie nights and nights filled with music at local District 6 parks are on the agenda. I will be attending plenty of them, so see you there!
Best,

Dev
City Council Updates
Making Progress on Homelessness

San Jose saw a 4.7% decline in homelessness in 2023 according to the latest Point-in-Time (PIT) Homeless Census. Preliminary results also show that we are getting more folks into interim housing and on the path towards permanent housing. There’s still much more work to be done. Our City needs much more affordable housing options to ensure that we keep this momentum, which is why I made this a priority in the adoption of the City’s budget for the next fiscal year.
No Office Hours this July

My virtual Office Hours will resume on Wednesday, August 9th from 5:30PM-6:30PM. The Zoom link will be available in the July and August editions of the newsletter. Stay tuned!

City Resources
Walk Safe San Jose

Walk Safe San Jose is a pedestrian safety plan that encourages walking, biking, and taking public transit. The goal is to improve pedestrian safety by providing safe routes for vulnerable road users.

Some goals are to reduce and eventually eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries, focus on corridor based projects like paint, cones, flexible barriers and signage.

Please take the survey to notify the City of some of the safer walking routes in San Jose. This will inform people in San Jose's inner neighborhoods on some safe and healthy ways to go on walks!
Home Repair Program

Habitat for Humanity is providing home repairs to qualified homeowners in San Jose. Homeowners can get free home upgrades such as exterior painting, lighting, heating, and cooling in addition to much more.

Take a look at the chart to see if you qualify for upgrades and learn more about the program here.
Fight Crime with Cameras

Help the San José Police Department fight crime by taking part in the Camera Archive & Mapping (CAM) program.

This program allows residents and business owners to register the locations of their video surveillance systems with the City. When a crime occurs, police will be able to identify the locations of nearby video cameras and help officers collect video evidence, and follow up on leads.

SJPD will also be able to directly contact CAM registrants who are using video in an area in which a crime occurred. Learn more about the program and register your camera here.
Free Summer Meals for Students

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is providing free summer meals for students this summer. The summer meal program provides nutritious meals to any children 18 and under who rely on school meals during the academic year. Children must be present and eat their meals onsite. No registration or documentation is required. Visit www.shfb.org/summer-meals to find a location and hours near you.
