2023-2024 School Calendar Update

Diocesan schools were recently advised that they should not hold classes on three Holy Days that take place during the first semester: August 15, November 1, and December 8. However, since we are required to have a minimum of 180 instruction days in the school year, this change required us to add three instruction days to the calendar. Therefore, December 18-20 will now be instruction days (exams). Please note for your planning that our Christmas Break will run from December 21st through January 2nd (with the second semester starting on January 3rd).

Pi Day Fundraiser

The Garces chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) raised funds to purchase calculators for the math department through their Pi Day event. Students donated money to have either Mr. Casper or Mr. Garcia get a pie in the face at lunch. Mr. Casper was the winner! The student who bid the most to "pie" Mr. Kasper was Romi Gianquinto. And then Mr. Fanucchi and Mr. Garcia agreed to donate additional money if Garces ASB Co-President and NHS member, Avi Borba, agreed to take one for the team. In all, NHS raised $453 for the math department. Another fun day on our campus!

"Got the Dot" Volunteers

Garces seniors, Milo Mastrucci and Bayleigh Ochoa, were the Garces student representatives at the "Got the Dot Walk" on Saturday, March 3rd. "Got the Dot" is organized through JJ's Legacy, a local non-profit set up to educate and encourage organ donation. JJ's Legacy was founded by Lori Malkin, mother of Garces alum Jeffrey Johns' 99. Jeffrey passed away in oa tragic accident and his family made the difficult and compassionate decision to donate his organs. As a result, Jeffrey saved five lives through organ donation. "Got the Dot" was established to encourage first-time drivers to register through the DMV to be organ, eye, and tissue donors. We are so proud of Milo & Bayleigh for volunteering their time to raise awareness for organ donation.

Celebrity Readers

Girls Soccer Coach, Kristy Walker-Kobayashi, took members of her soccer team to participate in Old River Elementary School's Celebrity Reader Day on Tuesday, March 14th. The Garces students who were celebrities for the morning and read to the class were Indie Chambers, Lola Rebuck, Caitlin Asaro, and Olivia Antongiovanni. Nice work Lady Rams! We love to see our students inspiring others with the love of reading.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Student Visionaries Program

Garces Memorial has three student led-teams participating in the LLS Student Visionaries Program. We are so proud of them!

Gloves Up to Cancer

"Gloves Up to Cancer" is led by Garces sophomore Andy Valdez who teamed up with a student from BCHS and they have recruited a team of 45 students from Garces, BCHS, and Liberty. On Tuesday, five members of their team made a professional presentation to Garces parent and local business owner, Mike Dewar. They asked him to be a sponsor of their team and he very kindly and generously agreed to donate. They have another presentation on Monday. Their goal is to raise $120,000 for families in Kern County who need support as they go through cancer treatment.

Pictured are Jade Jamieson, Malia Giumarra, Mr. Dewar, Reese Froehlich, Sophia Camou, and Andy Valdez.

Cross Out Cancer

Garces seniors Jordan Van Skike and Ella Shaw have chosen "Cross Out Cancer". as their team name. They chose the name because they believe they can do anything through God. Their goal is to raise $50,000. They have recruited families and friends to help them and have sent letters out in support of their commitment to helping people in Kern County who are in treatment for blood cancers. They chose to help because both Ella and Jordan have lost loved ones to cancer and have seen the toll that treatment can take on patients and their families.

The 661 Team

"The 661 Team" is comprised of three juniors who have teamed up to raise money for the LLS Student Visionaries Program. Hans Hoekstra is participating in honor of his cousin who has Burkett Lymphoma. Jack Gonzales is participating in honor of his grandmother who battled breast cancer. Ryna Surgener is participating in honor of his grandfather who battled leukemia and his aunt who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Their goal is to raise $150,000. They are working with friends and families to raise funds to make a difference.

College Scholarships

The Bakersfield Catholic Education Foundation has several college scholarships that are available ONLY to Garces seniors. They have been established by donors who want to help Garces seniors go on and be successful in college and in life. Each scholarship requires a personal essay that allows the donor to get to know the senior a little bit and helps with the selection process. Students must fill out the BCE Application along with the application for each scholarship they are applying for. Applications are due to Ms. Durrett by April 1st. Click on the link below for the applications.

Sports Update

Provided by Trevor Horn, Sports Information Director

Baseball

After a week off because of rainouts, the Rams were back in action on Thursday night at Wasco. Garces scored 12 runs in the first three innings and defeated the Tigers 19-8. Thomas Buckley went 3-5 with five RBIs, Jason Smith had three RBIs, Jonathan Rimer had two hits and three RBIs as Paul Pacheco won his second game of the season. Rams are 5-3 overall and will host Liberty on Monday at 3 p.m. in the River League opener.

Boys Golf

The Rams hosted the inaugural GMHS Match Play Tournament at Bakersfield Country Club on Tuesday. With just four players eligible per school, the best-ball tournament was fun and unique. Congratulations to Aidan and Carson Sorci on their second-place finish. The Rams open up River League action Monday at Stockdale Country Club.

Softball

The Rams had a total of five games rained out in the past week. The BHS Tournament was canceled due to rain last Friday and Saturday. And a makeup game with BHS on Wednesday was rained out due to excess water on the infield from Tuesday’s big storm. But the Rams are in action today and tomorrow at the Central Tournament in Fresno. First game is today at 4 p.m. against Kingsburg. Garces will host Liberty at 3 p.m. on Monday in the River League opener.

Swim and Dive

Garces Memorial hosted Liberty in a River League dual meet at the Salvucci Aquatic Center on Thursday. Matched up against one of the top teams in Central Section Division I, the Rams (D-II) held their own as Johnny Mendiburu won the varsity boys 500-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 5 minutes, 18.33 seconds. The Rams host the inaugural Garces Invitational on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

Boys Tennis

After a rain out last week halted the boys tennis River League match against Frontier with the Titans holding a 4-2 lead after singles, the Rams won all three doubles matches on Thursday to win 5-4 for the first league win of the year. The Rams dropped a non-league match at BCHS 7-2 on Wednesday and are at Centennial today at 3:30 p.m.

Track and Field

Wednesday was the first River League meet at Liberty. Junior Ian Harrison took fifth in the boys 100-meter in a personal-record time of 11.15 seconds. Sofia Moody was a third-best sophomore and eighth overall in the girls 1,600 in 6:15.92 and senior Ryan Chandler set a PR in the boys shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 9 inches, which was good for fourth place. Sophomore AJ Rivera finished tied for seventh in the girls long jump at 13-8.
