Why We Love This Place Wednesday:

Amanda Reeves and LCC ASB

By Terra Avilla

We may be considered a “small” community, but we have a never-ending plethora of events, people, activities and groups that never cease to amaze me.

I recently started teaching a course at Lassen College. Spending this much time on campus has given me extra exposure to additional (and wonderful) things happening in our community.

For example, prior to this year, I was totally unaware the college has its own ASB program. A very motivated, and thoughtful program. I am lucky enough to know the president of the LCC ASB and her name is Amanda.

I asked Amanda to compile a little something for me to share with you all, as I figured her own words would paint a much more beautiful picture of this wonderful club.

LCC ASB President Amanda Reeves:

“My Goal with joining ASB was to help our local college get connected with our community and our community get more connected to the college.

“Joining was hard for me because I’m older than most of the general students at the school. I had two daughters start at this college with me when I started. They actually have both been a part of the ASB this year which I don’t think would have happened if I had not made the leap, but I’m a very open person and I will hear anyone and anything out and not place judgment and I thought that would be a good reason for me to be president of the ASB.

“This year coming in was very rocky since ASB was basically non-existent since 2020 when Covid hit. So our big goal was to get ASB and all the College clubs up and running and get the students involved.

“We have put on club day events to introduce the clubs and ourselves as ASB and we have put on a community event at Halloween time where we had army/navy, church young adult group pastors, Public Health, many services and a few other community members come out and put up booths and introduce themselves and we had a costume contest that involved students, community members, and staff. It was an awesome time.

“I was able to obtain donations for prizes from Starbucks, Joes, Safeway, Main Street Lube, Anytime Fitness and Pizza Factory.

“I love that our community and college are connecting more and we had an ASB float in the Christmas parade for the first time. There have been big strides this year and we have so many more plans as connecting with Public Health and doing a workshop for sexual assault awareness month; we are overseeing several new clubs like the Fire Science club and Trio Tracks club and that’s just a couple off the top of my head.

“I believe we are overseeing 8-10 clubs in total right now that are all working hard to get involved with the students.

“We are also working on developing a fundraiser to donate the funds to a local organization. Our big event we are currently planning is the LCC 2023 Prom which will be catered and completely free to the students and staff and their guests.

“Going into this planning I wanted to make sure that this is 100% free and provided by ASB because our students deserve it after the last few years.

“We really are trying to lay the foundation for the ASB so that each year it can grow and expand and help build connections and relationships between the students, staff and the community. I have big hopes dreams and plans to better the ASB to better the school and the college experience for everyone who attends LCC.”

Yep. Amanda is a student, mother, works full time, and as you can see a very active member of this community. We are so lucky to have not only Amanda, but the ASB club for everyone. Starting new traditions, with fresh faces.

It’s things like this that make me so proud to live here, and love where we live.

Small Brush Fire Closes Highway

36 Near Susan River Bridge

Firefighters from the Susanville Fire Department and Cal-FIRE LMU made quick work of a small brush fire that briefly forced the closure of Highway 36, just east of the Susanville city limits Thursday evening.

Shortly before 8:00p.m. SFD Engine 621 responded to a possible brush fire near McDonalds, arriving to find a 10’ x 10’ fire located under the bridge, on the east side of the Susan River.

“The fire consisted of tree branches and a thick layer of bark,” explains SFD Engineer Andrew Jarrett. “E-621 extinguished the fire with the assistance from CalFire E-2261. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”

The highway was shut down, between the intersections of Riverside Drive and Skyline Road, for about an hour.

Agencies at the scene included the Susanville Fire Department, Cal-FIRE, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol.

Sheriff Canine Hank Finds

Narcotics During Traffic Stop

Two Westwood residents were arrested March 15th, after Deputies from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in front of Riverside Park, and canine officer Hank alerted them to the presence of a quarter-pound of methamphetamine.

According to details provided by the LCSO, deputies identified the driver of the vehicle as 33-year-old Westwood resident Amy Marie Clapper. The passenger was identified as 28-year old Westwood resident Beauregard Joseph Beavers.

It was determined that Beavers had a warrant for his arrest.

“A Deputy began to issue Clapper a citation for vehicle code violations,” explains LCSO Captain Mike Carney. “While the Deputy was completing the citation, LCSO K9 Hank was utilized to conduct a ‘free air sniff’ around the perimeter of Clapper’s vehicle.”

According to Carney, K9 Hank positively alerted to odor of narcotics, near the driver’s side of the vehicle, giving deputies probable cause to search the vehicle for narcotics.

“During the search of the vehicle, Deputies located several plastic baggies containing various amounts of methamphetamine. Also located in the vehicle was a digital scale, a large amount of un-used plastic baggies, and 33 Adderall pills.”

Both Clapper and Beavers’ were placed under arrest.

“During a search of Clapper’s person, Deputies located over $1,500 in cash and additional methamphetamine. Deputies believed the cash was proceeds from the sales of narcotics and seized the cash.”

Asset Forfeiture proceedings in regards to the seized cash are pending.

During a search of Beavers’ person, Deputies located a glass smoking pipe, commonly used to ingest controlled substances. All of the suspected methamphetamine located had a gross weight of 121.6 grams, or a little over a quarter pound.

Clapper and Beavers’ were booked into the Lassen County Jail on charges which included; Possession of a controlled substance, Possession of a controlled substance for sale, Transportation of a controlled substance and Possession of paraphernalia.

Lassen County’s hospital in 1935 from an Eastman Studios postcard

New Fee Schedule Given for Hospital

March 22, 1953

Supervisor Lester Coffin stated that the recent increase at the Lassen county hospital on charges from $3.50 to $10 a day would affect few patients.

Coffin said the increase was approved by the supervisors so in case patients who could afford to pay that amount were hospitalized at the county, the charges could be made.

Coffin said the county hospital operated at a large loss each year, and the approval of the increase was made to cut the losses whenever possible.

Figures on the hospital operation show that in 1950-51 the expenditures were $62,729.06 and the revenue only $2,539.08. In 1951-52 the expenses were $66,901.54 and revenue $7,543.17.

The hospital has on average about 45 patients, and of this number, only a small percentage are pay patients.
