A Message from the Founder & President
|
|
We have been so very busy in the last few months, which is why you haven’t heard from me in a little while.
In 2022, we saved 258 Golden Retrievers/Golden Mixes and found them loving new homes! And so far, 86 Goldens have received a second chance in life from AGA this year. That’s over 300 Dogs in almost 18 months.
Every year, when the economy is tough, it affects EVERY family who owns a dog. The reality is . . . Owners do not have funds set aside to take care of the medical needs of their pets. And often, most do not have pet insurance. Do you? These folks have very few places to turn for help, and one resource happens to be AGA.
|
|
|
Because of this great need, we have depleted our medical funds.
We really NEED YOUR HELP to replenish this vital fund. I always seem to be begging for money, but this is a critical time for us. In 20 years, we have never run this low - the need is this great.
Please consider making a $100 tax-deductible donation today and know that with this donation you are saving a Golden from suffering while providing medical care they need.
|
|
We need to let owners know that they can bring their Goldens to us - not leave them at a shelter or, worse, simply abandon them all for lack of funds. Any monies coming in will immediately go to our emergency medical fund.
I started this group to make sure no golden retriever ever suffered abuse or neglect from the hands of humans, especially when we are in a position to medically help those Goldens in need. Sadly, there are so many Goldens that need our help.
Thank you from all our Golden hearts for helping us in this time of need. Please give whatever you can to help these magnificent creatures. We must help them. We have no choice - they count on us to make them well and healthy so that they can live and run without pain. Look at your dog and imagine them in pain; no living creature deserves this, and you have the power to make sure every dog that comes to us is able to receive the medical help necessary to enable them to live their fullest life.
Please help us rebuild our Medical Fund.
As always, I am forever grateful for your continued support,
With gratitude,
Lauren

How Hot Is Too Hot
for a Dog’s Paws?
|
|
“Dog’s pads need to become acclimated to weather and stress,” says Klein. “The first long walk or jog of a warm season can often cause blisters on feet.”
|
|
To help condition your dog’s paws, walk on the pavement during cool weather. The hard surface helps toughen them and builds resistance for when the temperature heats up.
Many canine products help moisturize dog’s pads to prevent cracking from heat. When pads are dry, they’re more susceptible to burns from hot pavement.
Getting the right size—fitting snugly, but not too tight and not too loose—helps your dog acclimate to wearing shoes. Your dog’s feet need some room to breathe. Choose foot coverings with wrap-around closures and full-foot grips on the bottoms. Avoid products that stick to the dog’s pads.
If you must take your dog out during hot weather, avoid the hottest time of day. Walk in the early morning or evening. Choose grassy or shady areas.
For exercise during hot weather, set up a hard, plastic outdoor wading pool made for dogs. Plastic children’s pools tempt dogs to dig and tear. If your dog swims in an adult pool, add a canine life vest for safety.

Check Your Dog Once A Month on the 14th!

Facts about Cancer in Dogs
Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer? 50% of those dogs will die from cancer. In humans, there are 1.5 million new cases of cancer each year, but in dogs, there are 6 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. Dog cancer prevention is key to a long healthy life with your dog.
It is important that you start your fight against canine cancer and any other health issue from the day you bring your dog home. Checking your dog once a month for lumps and bumps or any abnormal behavior is key in the prevention of any health issue with your dog. We recommend doing it on the 14th of every month. Checking your dog will be a great little bonding time with your dog. If you are starting with a young dog, this time will also prepare them for their future vet wellness visits.
|
|
Now how exactly do you do this?
Start at their nose and work all the way to their tail. Make sure you are in a familiar, low-key environment where you and your pet can do this without distraction. In other words, not during dinner time or when you expect the mailman to be buzzing by the house.
Also, make sure you keep a journal of each of your Check Your Dog days so you will have notes to compare with should something arise.

LIVE FROM AGA CENTRAL!
I just had the best news ever! My new angel Mark Hansford donated $750 to pay for my heartworm treatment. I never met him so we don’t know each other but what is nicer than a stranger helping a poor dog?
Well, that’s just what angels do and I was lucky…
