Wesley Update

Pastor's Corner

I truly believe one of the most important and powerful things any church, not just Lamar Wesley, can do, is be a part of the community. Not just inviting members of the community to church, but bringing the church to the community.

I believe not only is this one of the key ways that the church will thrive in a new age, but also that it's what Jesus commands us to do! Loving people doesn't mean making them be like us or saying it's our way or the highway but it's meeting people where they're at and loving them for who they are and where they are.

I've made this one of our key values here at Lamar Wesley, asking ourselves how best can we be a part of this campus and the thriving of its students, whether or not they ever become members.

Recently, we've been seeing great fruit from this emphasis! Last semester, we were approached by members of Lamar's Health Center Education department and Student Government about expanding the Cardinal Food Pantry to include a clothing closet* as well. Two weeks ago, we had a faculty member come to us asking if his department could cook a meal for our lunch because he supports the work we're doing for students. And then just this past week, we were invited to attend the President's Dinner for International Students because we are a key community partner in meeting the needs of students.

In my eyes, this is what the Kingdom looks like. People coming together, different backgrounds, different upbringings, different faith, all towards making this world a better, more loving place.

There is life and there is hope ahead and I'm excited to see where God leads us! Thank you for being a part of this kingdom-building, community-engagement, love-filled journey!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Kyle Tremblay

*P.S. I will be sending out more information on ways to help stock our clothing closet soon, but if you are interested in running a clothing drive at your church, please contact me!

Ministry Updates

Cardinal Food Pantry Update

In addition to our monthly deliveries from SETX Foodbank, we also occasionally receive deliveries of fruits, vegetables, and other perishable goods. The first time this happened, I got a call asking if we wanted Watermelons. I, of course, said, "absolutely, that will be wonderful to hand out!" fully expecting them to bring 30, maybe 40 watermelons total.

Fast forward about 45 mins and a box truck is backing up to the Wesley with

5 PALLETS of watermelons, totaling somewhere around 250 watermelons!!! Needless to say that was a chaotic day, but we ended up giving out all the sliced and whole watermelons within 6 hours! This semester we've received deliveries of 1000+ oranges and 100 loaves of bread!

With Lamar being a food desert, access to these sort of perishable goods is limited for most students, especially low income students. We're incredibly blessed to have our partnership with SETX Foodbank that allows us to not only provide food, but to build relationships with students.

Lunch and Worship

Thank you to Pastor Emmanuel Echols and Salem UMC's Women of Faith group for providing our meal this week! If you or your church is interested in providing a meal, please give us a call or email!

With Valentine's Day around the corner, we spent worship talking about the negative power of loneliness and what it can do to us. As a part of our worship and this discussion, students made Valentine's Cards that we will send out to seniors living in assisted living facilities or who are homebound.

Students gathered to study before class. Some of the best community building happens during the in-between, not during events but just people sitting around a table getting to know each other.
