New Law Changes Pay Transparency Requirements for Every CA Employer

Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 1162 (SB 1162) this week, furthering the pay information CA employers must share with applicants, employees, and the state. This body of law has been creeping up around the country and now it’s in full force on January 1, 2023 for the Golden State. Here are a few of the highlights that will change how you post jobs, share salary ranges, keep records, and report a whole new level of pay and hours worked data to the state each year.

Paid Family Leave Small Business Grant

California’s Paid Family Leave Insurance (“PFLI”) program provides eligible employees with up to 8 weeks of wage replacement benefits when employees are on leave for certain qualifying reasons. To assist with the increased costs associated with providing such leave, the California Employment Training Panel and the California Workforce Development Agency funded a grant program for small employers.

San Francisco Passes Proposition G: Public Health Emergency Leave Ordinance (“PHELO”)

There is yet another leave in effect for employees working in San Francisco. Passed by voters in June as Proposition G, the Public Health Emergency Leave Ordinance, or “PHELO,” becomes effective on October 1, 2022.


There is some good news…  This leave applies only to large employers, those with 100 or more employees worldwide, and then only applies specifically to those employees performing work in the city of San Francisco.
