May Lunch and Learn Speaker Andrew Steele
Senior Facilities Planner, Boeing
UW MS Construction Management | IFMA Foundation Scholar (2015, 2020)
How did you get into Facility Management?
While exploring degree programs at BYU, I discovered Facility Management and immediately knew it aligned with my interests—integrating people, systems, and space. I took classes from IFMA Fellow Jeff Campbell, worked on consulting projects under his mentorship, and joined the IFMA student chapter. I presented original research on lightbulb lifecycle costing at World Workplace 2015 and won the IFMA Foundation ePoster Competition. That early exposure set the trajectory for my career. I reconnected with IFMA as a grad student at the University of Washington, again earning a Foundation scholarship and expanding my research into comprehensive cost frameworks for smart building technologies.
| | |
How do you benefit from the IFMA and the Seattle Chapter?
IFMA has been a cornerstone in my professional development—providing scholarships, presentation opportunities, and a network of engaged, innovative professionals. The Seattle Chapter has given me a platform to bring academic insights into real-world discussions, especially around attracting the next generation of talent to the FM industry. Through IFMA, I’ve reengaged as a speaker (Seattle Chapter, May 2025; World Workplace, September 2025) and continue to collaborate on workforce development strategies, including internship program design from my role at Boeing.
Any advice for new members?
Say yes to opportunities. Whether it's volunteering, presenting, or attending events—show up and stay curious. IFMA is a hub for passionate professionals, and the more you engage, the more value you’ll find.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spending time with my kids comes first—park days, swim lessons, and cheering on our UW Huskies football team. I also enjoy sharing what I’ve learned through writing and speaking, particularly on how technology is transforming the FM profession.

The Reporting Year 2024 Compliance Portal is now live! Benchmarking data for all buildings must be submitted by June 1st, 2025, for the 2024 reporting year.*
Please check your property’s compliance status in the portal by searching the OSE Building ID, property name, or ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® username. Many properties have fallen out of compliance with Seattle’s annual reporting requirement.
The City of Seattle Energy Benchmarking Reporting Year 2024 Compliance Portal is now live. Owners of buildings that are required to Benchmark can submit their energy use data now or learn more about the assistance OSE offers.

Building Tune-Up Deadlines
Cohort 2 Buildings (Nonresidential Buildings 100,000–199,999 SF)
Owners of Cohort 2 buildings have until April 1st, 2025, to submit a complete Tune-Up Summary Report before a first Notice of Violation with a $2,500 penalty will be issued. Owners of buildings that remain noncompliant after October 1st, 2025 will receive a second Notice of Violation with a $10,000 penalty.
If you are working on a tune-up that will not be completed by the deadline, please submit an incomplete Tune-Up Summary Report in the Seattle Service Portal, to demonstrate actions owners have initiated and what remains unfinished. While all required corrective actions must be completed before a tune-up is approved, a partial tune-up shows which buildings are close to compliance.
Cohort 3 Buildings (Nonresidential Buildings 70,000–99,999 SF)
The deadline for owners of Cohort 3 buildings to apply for an extension, waiver, and alternative compliance request is April 1st, 2025. All owners that do not apply for an extension, waiver, or alternative compliance request by this Tuesday must complete their second cycle tune-up by October 1st, 2025.

The Real Cost of a Building: Harmonizing Sustainability, Energy Efficiency and Life Cycle Costs
A new building represents more than just a physical structure; it embodies a vision, a commitment and a significant financial investment. The process of bringing a facility to life involves securing financing, establishing a budget, acquiring property, and assembling a team of architects, engineers and contractors. While these steps lay the foundation for success, the true cost of a building extends far beyond the initial price tag. Read More here.
