Join a conversation between Andrew Fitzsimons and Paul Muldoon, two celebrated Irish poets to mark the publication of Bashō: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo Bashō by Andrew Fitzsimons. They will talk about the work and legacy of one of the greatest figures in the history of Japanese literature, the master of haiku, Matsuo Bashō.

2023 AAS Annual Conference in Boston, MA

The Japan Foundation is a proud participant of the 2023 conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) in Boston, Massachusetts. Every year, we host an information booth and reception in order to share our grant programs and promote networking among hundreds of Japanese Studies scholars. Additionally, two panel discussions are supported by JFNY.

National Cherry Blossom Festival Opening Ceremony

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is one of the world’s great celebrations of spring. Featuring special performances from acclaimed artists to pay tribute to the longstanding friendship between Japan and the United States. This year, we have invited Anna Sato×Toshiyuki SasakiMika Stoltzman, and Travis Japan to present at the opening ceremony. This event is co-presented with The Japan Foundation and the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

National Cherry Blossom Festival Concert: Anna Sato x Toshiyuki Sasaki

Freer Gallery of Art (Washington, DC) & Online

Japanese Singer Anna Sato and drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki give traditional Japanese music a contemporary spin. Experience firsthand the traditional island songs of Amami Ōshima (Sato’s hometown) and learn the history and characteristics of the instruments Sato plays. Starting in a traditional style, this concert will progress to showcase the duo’s modern arrangements while also demonstrating the forms and charms of the island songs. This event is co-organized by The Japan Foundation, New York and National Museum of Asian Art.

JFF+ INDEPENDENT CINEMA

Japanese independent theaters, called “mini-theaters” that have nurtured the diversity of Japanese cinema culture have selected twelve Japanese independent films to bring you closer to the current Japanese cinema culture. Complemented by interview videos with directors and actors, and interview articles with managers of the mini-theaters.

Visit this alluring exhibition featuring three generations of the Kyoto-based Kondo ceramic dynasty. Transcendent Clay / Kondo: A Century of Japanese Ceramic Art serves as a bridge between the past and the present as well as meditation on the future. Genji

Join Asia Society Texas for the world premiere of Genji, a contemporary retelling of the classic novel The Tale of Genji, in a performance about friendship, love, and the dynamics of power and social class in Heian-period Japan. This event is supported through JFNY Grant for Arts & Culture grant.

To apply, please register by going to the Application form and clicking on “Click Here to Complete the Digital Library Signup Survey” at the bottom of the page. We will send out confirmation emails from The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It ​will include your Library Card number and Pin code to access. After you receive it, you will be ready to read digital books on both OverDrive webpage and their e-reader app: Libby!
