Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society

Announces Bicentennial Mascot

2024 is the Bicentennial Year for the Town of Mina and the board of directors of the Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society has been planning events to be held during this 200th anniversary year. A feature of the Bicentennial is the mascot “Swanee” the Swan.

The society chose the swan as the mascot for the Town of Mina Bicentennial because of the positive symbolism attributed to swans, the history of swans on Findley Lake, and special memories of Clarence “Swanee” Swanson from the Findley Lake Roller Rink days.

Positive Symbolism – In many cultures, the swan symbolizes transformation, inner strength, and prosperity. The Town of Mina, once known primarily for its agricultural base and then as a special place to raise a family, is now widely known for the beauty and recreational enjoyment of the lake as well as the quaint and charming hamlet with retail and dining experiences. Over its 200 years, the Town of Mina has continued to be strong and prosper by transforming itself to meet the needs of the community.

Local History – Pam Porter Watrous recalls her days as a Findley Lake Girl Scout when the girls in the troop would feed the swans. Will Shum owned a Victorian house near the hamlet and kept swans in the lake near his home. In the winter, they were moved to the outlet of the lake where the girl scouts and boy scouts kept them healthy by feeding them. Findley Lake remains part of the annual migration of swans traveling back and forth to their winter and summer habitats. We continue to be enchanted by the arrival of the swans when they rest at Findley Lake for a few days before they continue on their journey.

Clarence “Swanee” Swanson – for those of you who recall the excitement of the Findley Lake Roller Rink and Ship’n Shore back in the 1950s and 60s, you may remember the man behind the counter with his work apron who fixed the clamp on skates and kept the wheels and the fun rolling. “Swanee” was one of the iconic people from our past and remembering him brings back fond memories of happy days in the Town of Mina.

So, when you see swans popping up all over town, you’ll know that the swan as a mascot for our Bicentennial has a special connection to the Town of Mina.

“Swanee”

The Town of Mina Bicentennial Mascot

Calling All Fabric Creators

The Findley Lake & Mina Historical Society has announced that the mascot for the 2024 Bicentennial Celebration is “Swanee the Swan” - and the society is looking to assemble an ensemble (also called a bevy) of at least 200 delightful fabric swans to celebrate our 200 years. We are looking for volunteer sewers, quilters and other fabric creators who are interested in making one or perhaps many more of the whimsical swans from the swan template we found online (see photo included with this article). Each swan will be created from remnants of fabric that the society has acquired or from a stash that the fabric creator owns. The goal is to give each swan its own unique personality by creating interesting combinations of colors and fabric designs. Each “Swanee” will be sold as a unique and special memento of the 200th anniversary.

Your assistance with this creative project would be greatly appreciated – whether you are able to donate fabric and/or batting, cut out fabric to make kits to assist seamstresses/seamsters, or use your sewing talent to construct swans, please help us achieve our goal of 200 swans by April 1, 2024 for the 200th anniversary of the formation of the Town of Mina.
