Dear River Forest residents,

Our 98th Annual Memorial Day Parade will take place this coming Monday, May 29 and honor the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces - both active duty and veterans. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Augusta Street and Ashland Avenue, traveling south on Ashland and ending at Keystone Park with a ceremony, the reading of the Memorial Day Honor Roll, and a free hotdog lunch. I encourage residents to participate in this annual family-friendly event.

Please review the article below for road closures during the parade. I would also like to remind residents that Village Hall will be closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Normal business hours will resume Tuesday, May 30 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday’s refuse collection will be scheduled for Tuesday and subsequent collections during the week will be delayed by one day.

Lastly, I’d like to congratulate the 2023 graduates of Lincoln, Willard, Roosevelt, Grace Lutheran and Saint Vincent Ferrer grade schools, Saint Luke Middle School, Oak Park River Forest and Trinity high schools, Dominican University, Concordia University and Triton College. We look forward to great things from these young men and women.

Sincerely,

Cathy Adduci, Village President

Electricity Scams

Residents should be cautious of alternative electric suppliers, who solicit you to sign up and often charge much higher rates. They are currently selling door-to-door, over the phone and by mail, and these activities have been reported to the Village.  Please note the Village and its energy supplier, MC Squared Energy do not require you to sign-up. A part of Municipal Electric Aggregation is that the supplier switch is automatic and the rate is the same as the ComEd rate. More information can be found here.

10th Anniversary Library Rededication

Join the River Forest Public Library and its Foundation on Saturday, June 3 at 3 p.m. for a rededication of the Anne T. Smedinghoff Memorial Garden on its 10-year anniversary. Anne, a River Forest native, served in the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer when she and five other Americans were killed in a suicide bomb attack in Zabul on April 6, 2013. Anne frequently enjoyed the River Forest Public Library during her years living in our Village and was a strong advocate for children's literacy. To learn more, click here.

Congratulations, Reuben!

Historic Preservation Awards

Applications for the 2023 Village of River Forest Historic Preservation Awards are due on or before Friday, July 28.

Homeowners, architects or contractors who have helped maintain the historic character of the Village are encouraged to apply. For more information or an application, click here.

Proper Mulch Rings

We’ve all seen mulch around tree bases, but did you know that those rings should look like donuts, not volcanos? A donut ring of mulch creates space around the base of the trunk to protect roots and improve moisture retention and soil condition. A volcano shape piled up against a tree trunk causes decay and makes it harder for moisture to get to the roots. Visit the Morton Arboretum website to learn more about the benefits of mulch and how to apply it correctly. If you see trees incorrectly mulched on the parkway, please adjust it or submit a service request to the Village here.

GreenTown Comes to Triton College

GreenTown: "The Future of Community" is coming to Triton College Thursday, June 22! Attendees will see presentations from inspiring speakers, including Dr. Tony G. The focus for this year's event will be on communities in the Chicago metro area that are working together to achieve climate, equity and sustainability outcomes - with a focus on energy, waste technology innovation, solutions to the climate crisis and more.
