Here’s the truth – “For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish.” (Mark 14.7)

Well, then, I wish for us to show some kindness to them in the form of ongoing, consistent, and generous contributions to our Duncan Community Food Pantry.

Here’s the truth – food prices are rising, as if they had not already been high enough.

Here’s the truth – government services and subsidies are being cut back or completely eliminated.

Here’s the truth – non-profit organizations are feeling the hit from people asking needing, more while non-profit resources are diminishing.

Here’s the truth – it’s time for all of us as individuals and as congregations to redouble our efforts. Times of chaos and uncertainty and unrest and fear call for people of faith to step up and step in to fill the gaps.

In today’s staff meeting, this is what was shared: Traffic to the food pantry has significantly picked up. We know this because the box is basically empty when we fill it once a week. This past Sunday was our monthly food collection day, and we received three plastic grocery bags with food. That will likely last only through the week. Because of financial donations that have been given to this project, we were able to replenish our supply in the office, and that will last us through next week. While we have more donated funds to spend, our monthly collections have been low for the last few months.

Any time a good project comes along like this one, we know that we all need reminders. Consider this your friendly reminder: It’s time to show more kindness than we’ve ever shown before. That’s really a good word that applies to much more than the Duncan Community Food Pantry!

But concerning this particular ask, a few things:

PLEASE do not donate expired food.

PLEASE do not donate opened packages.

PLEASE feel free to bring non-perishable food items to the church, any time. While we have set the first Sunday of every month as a collection day, we will take the food any time you bring it.

Here’s the truth “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat . . .” (Matthew 25.35) is one of the most important teachings of our faith. I pray that we will live out this truth as one small way to make a difference in our community. - Amy

Holy Week Is Upon Us

Mark your calendars with the following opportunities as we journey from Palm Sunday to Easter:

  • Sunday, April 13 – Palm Sunday

Children, please meet in Helt Hall at about 10:50 a.m. to receive your palm branches and prepare to process in during the Processional Hymn.

  • Thursday, April 17 – Maundy Thursday

A service of contemplation and communion at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

(Please note: Thirsty Third Thursday will be bumped to 7:15 p.m. at our usual spot—the Rhino Market at SouthPark.)

  • Friday, April 18 – Good Friday

A brief, livestream-only noon service featuring the Seven Last Words of Jesus.

  • Sunday, April 20 – Easter

Our 11:00 a.m. service will feature additional musicians, a flowered cross, and Resurrection Good News as we culminate Holy Week with joyful worship.

Immediately following worship, there will be an Easter Egg Hunt for all children in the courtyard and on the playground. Children, bring your Easter baskets and come prepared for more fun and games, thanks to our Seasonal Parties Team, led by Karen Holt.

Please note: The Church Office will be closed on Tuesday, April 22 as our designated Easter holiday "day off."

Getting Ready for Easter - Doing a Little Spring Yard Work

Join us this Saturday, April 12, to help shape up our yard for Easter. We’ll provide Chick-fil-A breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and begin working at 8:30 a.m. We’ll finish in time for lunch. Come for as long as you can—all hands on deck. Bring pruners, trimmers, weed eaters, shovels/mulch forks, wheelbarrows, work gloves… and willing spirits. We always have fun working together. See you Saturday.

Easter Egg Hunt Donations

The Seasonal Parties Team, led by Karen Holt, is hard at work making this year’s Easter Egg Hunt “Eggs-stra” special. Here’s what is needed from you: candy-filled plastic eggs (no chocolate please, it melts). We can’t have too many! Please bring them by the church office or bring them this Sunday morning.

More details will be in next week’s newsletter, but this is just a reminder for families with children about the event and a plea for donations of candy-filled plastic eggs to be filled with prizes by Karen and her team.

Saying Goodbye, Saying Hello

We want to take this opportunity to thank Steve Cothran for his time with us as our Interim Youth Minister, and to welcome Caleb Foust and his family.

Please note the following schedule:

  • Sunday, April 27 – Meet and Greet following worship to say thanks to Steve
  • Sunday, May 4 – Meet and Greet following worship to welcome Caleb
  • Sunday, May 4, 5:30–7:00 p.m. – Backyard party at the Deans’ home to welcome Caleb (all children, youth, and families are invited)

Introduction to Open and Relational Theology - Amipotent

How important is freedom in your theology? Can you make sense of life and moral responsibility if God is all-powerful and controls everything?

This week, we explore God's awesome power in the world and how it relates to creation. Is God all-powerful? If so, why do bad things happen? Why is there evil in the world?

This study is based on the book Open and Relational Theology: An Introduction to Life-Changing Ideas by Thomas Oord, who defines ORT and explains how it differs from traditional theologies. You do not have to read the book to participate—a summary of the chapter will be handed out in class.

Please join us this Sunday, April 13, at 9:45 a.m. in Milford Chapel.

Clean Linens and Blankets

Thank you to everyone who did laundry this year for Room in the Inn! There is still some laundry out there waiting to be returned. Our team of women—who were so faithful in setting up for each session of Room in the Inn—would like to wrap up the season by collecting all of the items and organizing the linen closet. Please return clean sheets, towels, and blankets to the office. Thank you!

Sanctuary Hearing Air Loop - Up and Running Again

Thanks to the good folks at All Ears Hear Here our system has been repaired. If you wear a hearing aid that has a T-coil loop, you can connect to the sanctuary system during our services. We also have several portable headsets available. If you would like to borrow one for a service, please ask one of the volunteers at the multimedia desk each Sunday at the back of the sanctuary.

Caring Church Companions

Our CCC team met this morning to put together Easter goodie bags for our Friends at Home. A plant, some candy, and a beautiful card—just a little something to deliver to those who have a hard time getting to church on a regular basis.

Thank you to our wonderful team, led by Sarah Ashcraft, for extending our community beyond the walls of our church and into the lives of those who have been, and remain, an important part of our church family.

Deacon of the Week

My name is Rebecca Lewis. My husband, Sam, and I have been members of Park Road since 2021. We’ve lived in the Ballantyne area for the past five years. We welcomed our son, Cooper, in February 2023, and he is loving the nursery life and making new little friends at Park Road! We are super excited about what the future holds for our children’s ministry.

I’m a member of the choir, as well as a new deacon this year, and I’m looking forward to serving the Park Road families. I currently teach music part-time at Smart Diehl Academy in Mint Hill, NC, and I also work a full-time Mary Kay business as an Independent Beauty Consultant. I love my flexible schedule and getting to be home with our son, Cooper.

Mark Your Calendars: Upcoming Blood Drive on April 27

The next blood drive for OneBlood is scheduled for Sunday, April 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Donors can register and make an appointment at Oneblood.org or may also just show up on the day of the drive.

This blood drive is for whole blood and not platelets. The drive is open to all donors (male and female) age 18 and over who are eligible to donate. The OneBlood website provides details about donor eligibility.

Donors also get a free health screening that includes blood pressure, hemoglobin level, and cholesterol. Usually, there are additional perks for donating, like a t-shirt or gift card.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the church office or Kevin Kline.

Fun Food Friday - Soul Food Style!

For our next gathering, we’ll enjoy the spectacular Southern cooking at Mert’s Heart and Soul, located in the heart of uptown Charlotte. You can meet in the parking lot (we need to leave at 11:15 a.m.), or simply meet us at Mert’s at 11:30 a.m.—but don’t be late. They’re always full for lunch!

Mert’s is located at 214 North College Street, and parking is available around the corner at 209 E. Fifth St. Please sign up—whether riding with us or meeting there—so we know how many folks to expect. To RSVP, please email the church office: info@ParkRoadBaptist.org or sign up on Sunday in Helt Hall.

Easter Remembrances

Easter is a wonderful time to honor and remember our loved ones. This year, we are asking people to donate to the cost of flowering the cross. With a $10 donation, you can name those you would like to remember “in honor of” and/or “in memory of.” A list of all names will be printed in the Easter Sunday bulletin. Email the church office info@ParkRoadBaptist.org or sign up in Helt Hall on Sundays.

Monthly Mission Offering

April’s Mission Offering will go to Nourish Up, a collaboration between two long-standing non-profits with a rich history of fighting hunger: Loaves & Fishes and Friendship Trays. Together, they’ve joined forces under the new name Nourish Up.

Lifting up our community through food, Nourish Up provides groceries to neighbors in need in Mecklenburg County through the largest network of food pantries in North Carolina, grocery home delivery, and healthy meals delivered each weekday through their Meals on Wheels program.
