Thursday evening karaoke at Madame ZuZu's in Highland Park is a popular destination for the community, including TotalLink participants, families, and friends. Our recent meetups have demonstrated how music and a karaoke microphone make participants and guests feel included and inspired.
All heads at Madame ZuZu's turned when they heard Amara singing “Mamma Mia” on stage. She confidently sang every word while dancing to the music. Those that knew her did a double-take as she was up on stage proudly singing with the support of her friend, Nina. The audience clapped and cheered. Sue, Amara’s mother, beamed in her direction. Sue said, “I rarely see Amara comfortable being the center of attention in public and so vocal.” People often describe Amara as a soft-spoken woman of few words. The Amara on stage was the Amara her family knows - comfortable in her skin, full of life, and a voice with something to say.
Mary was up and out of her chair when she heard one of her favorite songs. She turned to everyone around her and said, “Let’s dance!” Just like that, people were with her on the dance floor. Mary, the grandmother of Nina, a TotalLink participant, has been a regular at Karaoke and has had a full dance card every night.
Levi was inspired to sing the song “1979” by Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins in honor of Corgan being the owner of Madame Zuzu’s.
"Everyone is so happy to have a night out with people who accept them and have fun together. There is no judgment and total joy. Everyone is so loving, and they accepted me," said
Mary Conrad, Karaoke Meetup regular and Nina's grandmother.
