Dear Colleagues,
This month, we celebrate our educational colleagues. Whether they are standing in front of the classroom or behind the lunchroom counter or work as principals, I am grateful to the dedication they exhibit to meet the needs of students and their families throughout the year. On May 1, we celebrated National School Principals Day. The week of May 8-12 is Teacher Appreciation Week with National Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday, May 9, and California Day of the Teacher on Wednesday, May 10. We also celebrate School Nurse Day on May 10. On May 21, we start Classified School Employees Week, when we recognize the many people who help support teaching and learning in a variety of ways. These are opportunities to celebrate all school employees and show them how important their contributions are to the communities they serve.
Last month, the four Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year finalists and seven Contra Costa County School Employees of the Year were announced. In both competitions, the county finalists and winners were selected by two separate judging panels from a pool of talented and dedicated candidates that represent what it means to be a teacher or classified employee today – from the challenges to the “aha” moments. We are honored to have the opportunity to recognize outstanding individuals who contribute so much to their school communities and to the lives of the students and families.
We are also recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May. I continue to share the resources and curriculum guides crafted by our Curriculum & Instruction team because I believe it is important that we continue to learn about each other and provide sources of inspiration that can be shared in the classroom because representation matters.
Even though we are coming up on the last weeks of the school year, there is still plenty that we want and need to accomplish before most of us say goodbye to our students for the summer. This agency still has professional development opportunities and workshops for you to take advantage of before the school year is over. So please take a look at the resources we have curated below and feel free to reach out with any questions.
With gratitude,
Lynn Mackey
Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools

May Activity Guide for Mental Health Awareness
Mental Health is how we cope with everyday life. Some days you might feel more confident or let things roll off your back more easily. On other days, maybe the stress has you feeling sad or anxious. These are completely normal things to feel and normal ways to feel them. It's when the feelings get to be so overwhelming that they make living your normal, everyday life a challenge. When things like just getting out of bed, spending time with friends or doing your favorite activities become something you just can't do, that's when your mental health is becoming a problem, and possibly a mental illness. Trying to tell the difference between what expected behaviors are and what might be the signs of a mental illness isn't always easy. There's no easy test that can let someone know if there is mental illness or if actions and thoughts might be typical behaviors of a person or the result of a physical illness.
Tools 2 Thrive
The toolkit includes sample materials for communications and social media as well as printable handouts on the following topics:
