A Message from Pastor Berg | |
The Trouble with Holy Week
As a Christian, the most important week of my year is Holy Week. It is a time that is set aside for the people of faith to contemplate the week leading up to when our Lord, Jesus the Christ, was killed, for healing the sick, forgiving sinners, and preaching good news to the poor. Jesus' radical understanding of God's preferred future for all of creation is that love and equality must prevail. This scared the powers of this world so much; they hung him on a cross till he died. They buried him knowing full well that was the end of it.

LWR School Kits:
Calling All Sewists!
We need people to sew bags for the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) school kit project. There will be a live demonstration/class on how to sew the bags on Saturday, April 26 from 10 am- 1 pm. Please bring a sewing machine, polyester, or all-purpose thread & we will provide the fabric. Instructions are in the hallway by the upstairs bathrooms on the long oak table. Feel free to take bags that are bundled and ready to be sewn. We need fabric, so if you have extra at home, or feel like shopping, light weight canvas, cotton duck, cotton twill, and light weight denim work well for sewing the bags. It takes about a yard and a half of fabric per bag. Thank you to Donna Gilbery for cutting the fabric for sewing! Questions? Call Lucy Kay Osborne (425-753-2822) or Sue Ebert (425-466-1717).

1) Moving forward with parking lot paver repair.
2) Fire door repair between kitchen & Atrium.
3) Looking into replacing blinds in The Landing, Nursery, & Preschool rooms.
4) Getting video/photos of building for pre, during & post construction by Harbour Homes.
Update: Building and Property and Joyce Thode met with Harbor Homes:
- Project will take approximately two years to complete
- Builder will use sophisticated laser measuring devices to monitor the stability of the church
- This will be accomplished by using small, unobtrusive remover laser points that will be monitored one to two times a week to check the stability. Movement of less than sixteenths of an inch will trigger a work stoppage. There is also a seismic monitor on the building site and if the earth’s movement is beyond the acceptable level an alarm will go off and work will be stopped.
- Harbor Homes will limb one tree in the alley to place the new electrical power pole location.

Book Club
The Code Breaker by Walther Isaacson
April 22, 7 pm
Discussion Leader: Joe Siebert
“A Best Book of 2021 by Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Time, and The Washington Post. The bestselling author of Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs returns with a “compelling” (The Washington Post) account of how Nobel Prize winner Jennifer Doudna and her colleagues launched a revolution that will allow us to cure diseases, fend off viruses, and have healthier babies. When Jennifer Doudna was in sixth grade, she came home one day to find that her dad had left a paperback titled The Double Helix on her bed. As she sped through the pages, she became enthralled by the intense drama behind the competition to discover the code of life. Even though her high school counselor told her girls didn’t become scientists, she decided she would.”
“Driven by a passion to understand how nature works and to turn discoveries into inventions, she would help to make what the book’s author, James Watson, told her was the most important biological advance since his co-discovery of the structure of DNA. She and her collaborators turned a curiosity of nature into an invention that will transform the human race: an easy-to-use tool that can edit DNA. Known as CRISPR, it opened a brave new world of medical miracles and moral questions. After helping to discover CRISPR, Doudna became a leader in wrestling with these moral issues and, with her collaborator Emmanuelle Charpentier, won the Nobel Prize in 2020. Her story is an “enthralling detective story” (Oprah Daily) that involves the most profound wonders of nature, from the origins of life to the future of our species.” (Summary by Goodreads)
Please contact Katie Pyne or Roger Steinke for additional information about the Book Club. A copy of the Featured Book of the Month is available in the First Lutheran Church Library.

March 2025 Library News
Thank you to everyone who participated in FLC library’s 2025 annual "Show Us Your Favorite Photo" contest. We will celebrate our First Lutheran Church's 139th birthday on March 16th with a photo display of this year’s photo contest submissions. In a few months the contest winners will be chosen and framed.
The theme for the March book display table is: “Simplicity”. As the familiar Shaker hymn reminds us, "Tis a gift to be simple." This month you'll find a display outside the library featuring a variety of great books that teach us how to embrace simplicity in our everyday lives.

National Arbor Day
National Arbor Day is always celebrated on the last Friday in April (April 25th this year), but many states observe the day at different times of the year, depending on the best time for planting in each state. The first Arbor Day occurred on April 10, 1872, so celebrating, caring, and planting trees is a long-recognized way of sustaining our planet, our forests, our wildlife, and our lives. In Washington State, Arbor Day is celebrated on both its national day of recognition and on the second Wednesday of April. So, this year plant a tree on April 9th and on April 25th!
King County Hazardous Wastemobile – April 11-13, 2025
The King County traveling Wastemobile will return to the University of Washington - Bothell campus (18115 Campus Way NE) location on April 11th, 12th, and 13th. The hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. For detailed instructions, acceptable household hazardous items, allowable quantities for each, and the complete 2025 schedule of dates, times, and locations, check out their website.
This year, Earth Day is on Tuesday, April 22nd. It was first celebrated 55 years ago to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The theme for 2025 is “Our Power, Our Planet.” This theme focuses on global efforts for renewable energy, tripling the global generation of clean electricity by 2030. Check out EarthDay.org for a variety of events that are being coordinated on a global basis to recognize the significance of this day.

Healing Creation: Sacred Hope in Action Retreat
Saturday, April 5th, 9am-3pm
Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Everett
Hope, active in love, provokes us to join in God’s work of healing creation. Grounded in the image of the Tree of Life in Revelation, Biblical scholar Rev. Dr. Barbara Rossing will explore how God’s creation prompts us into action and calls the church into a more expansive identity. Rev. Erik Kindem and members of the Peace Lutheran Creation Care Team will explore ways to connect the dots between our worship life and the natural world, as well as offer practical actions for daily life. Come, be inspired by these, and other leaders whose hearts beat for restorative justice and the healing of God's creation.
Guest Faculty
Rev. Dr. Barbara Rossing is a Professor Emerita of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and an avid environmentalist. She served as pastor of a congregation in Minnesota, director for Global Mission Interpretation for the American Lutheran Church, pastor at Holden Village, and chaplain at Harvard University Divinity School. As a public theologian her media appearances have included “CBS Sixty Minutes” as well as The History Channel and National Geographic.
Rev. Erik P. Kindem was ordained in 1986. For five years he served as Pastor/Director of Lutheran Ministry with Native Americans, working with Karuk, Yurok, Hupa and Wiyot Tribal communities in Northwestern California. Subsequent calls include parishes in Portland, OR, LaCenter, WA, and West Seattle, where he has served as pastor of Peace Lutheran Church since 2005. Among his deepest passions is connecting the dots between Lutheran sacramental life and the natural world.
