On March 8, MNC Healthy Aging and Disability Services (HADS) honored and celebrated International Women’s Day. MNC’s collaboration and partnership with UCSF’s Weill Institute for Neurosciences Memory and Aging Center, had their staff lead a morning workshop focused on “Coatlicue,” an important deity in Aztec mythology. Coatlicue symbolizes creation, destruction, and the duality of life and death—she is the earth mother goddess associated with fertility, rebirth, and the continuous cycle of existence.
In addition to exploring Coatlicue’s significance, the workshop highlighted the meaning and history of Women’s Day. The main activity centered around flowers—participants analyzed their structure and engaged in a sensory exploration of different scents.
To conclude the day, everyone collaborated in creating a natural mandala using flower petals and leaves, bringing together art, nature, and reflection.

| | Abriendo Puertas Kick Off | | Abriendo Puertas sessions are back and better than ever for parents! | | Parents quickly connected with each other at the Kick-Off session | | Participants learn to become powerful advocates for themselves and their families | |
We kicked off our very popular Abriendo Puertas/Opening Doors Series at our beautified Family Engagement Room at MNC Alegria Campus. Abriendo Puertas is a nine-session series and the first evidence based bilingual parent curriculum created by parents with the tools to build parent leadership skills, promote family well-being, help parents prepare children towards school readiness and become strong and powerful advocates in the lives of their children and to preserve family culture. Parents are taught they are their child’s first teacher.
We started with 12 participants and since this series is very popular, we offer two groups on different days. It was a wonderful starting session as parents quickly connected with the other parents and had some time for themselves as we also provided childcare and breakfast. The participants said they are eager to come back for the next sessions and thanked MNC Early Care and Education for this great opportunity!!!

| | MNC Excelsior Campus celebrates Women's history month with portraits of Frida Kahlo | | This activity was great for hand eye coordination and sorting buttons helps with classification skills | |
In celebration of Women's History Month MNC Excelsior Campus decided to learn about Frida Kahlo and create an art exhibit. The children spent an extended period of time in small groups to create a portrait of Frida Kahlo. This activity strengthened their hand and eye coordination as well as their classification skills by sorting buttons from large to small and colors. This activity enhances the children's creative thinking skills and encourages them to work collaboratively!
Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits (self-portraits) and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. She was inspired by the country's popular culture; she employed a native folk art style to explore questions of identity postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Her paintings often had strong autobiographical elements and mixed realism with fantasy.
