Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
Grades 9-12
|
August 5, 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty. Student engagement with the history of this landmark agreement continues to be timely today. In this lesson, they consider the threat of nuclear weapons in the early 1960s and the opportunities and challenges in negotiating an arms control agreement.

The Kinzua Dam, The Cold War, and US Treaties
Grades 9-12
|
The Kinzua Dam in western Pennsylvania has a tumultuous history that highlights a treaty with the Seneca Nation that was breached by the US government. In this lesson, students consider the arguments made by three individuals regarding the planned construction of the Dam against the backdrop of the Cold War.

In this lesson, students examine the official program for the March on Washington to learn about the event itself and about the people who played a leading role in the civil rights struggle. They research different organizations and civil rights leaders and then create a montage to depict the diverse makeup of the movement in visual form.

Persuader in Chief: JFK's June 11, 1963 Address on Civil Rights

In the 1950s and 1960s, the civil rights movement was gaining momentum, leading to significant turning points in our nation's history. In this lesson, students analyze the president's role as "Persuader in Chief" as they examine JFK's landmark "June 11, 1963 Radio and Television Report to the American People on Civil Rights" and evaluate the effectiveness of the speech.

Strengthening Civic Infrastructure and Combating Hate: The Role of the Arts, Culture, and Faith

Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff delivered an address before a panel discussion on combating hate through arts, culture, and faith. Panelists included Maria Rosario Jackson, Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts; Rashad Hussain, US Ambassador at Large for International Religious Freedom; Simran Jeet Singh, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute’s Religion and Society Program; Eric Ward, Executive Vice President of Race Forward; Douglass Williams, Chef and Owner of MIDA Restaurants; and Sophia Bush, actress and activist.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Watch the video of our recent Celebrate! program which took place on Saturday and learn about many fascinating Hindu deities — from stories of Ganesha, the playful elephant-headed God, to the dances to rhythms of drums by Nataraja, a depiction of Shiva as the Lord of Dance — in a stunning performance with beautiful costumes and traditional dance styles from India. The video will be available until May 31st.
