The Ally: Join us Live at Noon!

This week we share several updates and opportunities. First and foremost, I hope all of you will join us for our Families as Allies Live Update Wednesday, May 31, at noon. Families as Allies is about ALL of us; we want to hear everyone's thoughts and ideas. You can join us via Facebook or YouTube.

During the live update, we will share more information about what's in this week's edition of the Ally related to parent peer support, staying covered on Medicaid and using the Well Visit Planner with children ages birth to six. We will also talk about dealing with school issues that often arise at the end of the year and can sometimes cause parents to worry throughout the summer break.

Don't forget June 1 at noon (CT) is our virtual Drop-In Family Support Time. All families are welcome. Please check out our events section for more training opportunities and conferences. June 1 to June 3 is the 2023 Peer Summit, and June 6 to June 7 is the 2023 Mississippi disAbility MegaConference. Both are at the County Line Hilton in Jackson.

NEWS

In February 2023, we shared with you that due to COVID-19 being declared a federal emergency, the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM), like all state Medicaid agencies, paused renewals in the Spring of 2020. The national emergency has ended, so Medicaid began resuming renewals in April.

Parent peer support, where one parent who has challenges with their child supports another parent on the same journey, makes a tremendous difference in the lives of families. It gives families hope, helps them feel less alone and assists them in finding real-world solutions.

The Well Visit Planner (WVP) is a tool that parents or other people raising children ages birth to 6 can use to track their children's development and prepare for their children's medical appointments.

RESOURCES

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a globally disseminated course that trains members of the public to recognize and respond to mental health issues in their communities. Although substantial evidence suggests that MHFA training is associated with positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intent, little is known about how MHFA trainee–delivered aid supports mental health needs. This systematic review sought to summarize the extant research evaluating MHFA trainees’ helping behaviors and the impacts of these behaviors on people experiencing a mental health problem (i.e., recipients).
