This month’s life skills program and presentation is provided by Amanda Aleman of Milford Federal Bank. Amanda will be teaching children ages 14-18, about money management, tips for saving, and how to open a bank account. Amanda started in banking when she was in college at age 19 and has been with the company for 20 years! Amanda started as a Teller in the Rhode Island branch while she was a college student. She enjoyed being able to help people and the job so much, she decided to make it her career path. She worked her way to Customer Service, then to Supervisor and became a manager in 2011 at the Plaza location. She was then offered a new position of Retail Trainer/ HS Branch in 2019-2020 which is her current position. Amanda always volunteers for local events that include children, like after school programs, reading books to students in class, or giving a presentation on Banking. This made for an easy transition to finical literacy. Amanda truly enjoys being able to make a positive impact in youth adults’ lives, especially when it comes to their financial future! This very important program will be held on Wednesday, May 17th at 3:30. This program is for registered after school members only. An email with more details will be sent to parents and guardians. If you are interested and have not received the email, please call the center. Our Life Skills programming was created in honor of our former board member Ron Taylor.

In collaboration with the Milford Regional Medical Center and Nadine from Connected and Inspired, the MYC will resume the Nutrition program on May 9th at 3:30. We are very excited to bring the importance of nutrition and the knowledge of making no-bake snacks for the kids who choose to participate. We also want the children to learn that this is something they can make for themselves! We’ve had a huge interest in this class in the past and hope to maintain the popularity by keeping it fun yet educational, while enforcing healthy-eating habits.

We are also excited to bring back our fishing program, which is run by longtime volunteer Dr. Bob Gilmore. On May 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd at 4:00, students will have the opportunity to walk down to Fino field to learn bait and fishing techniques with no prior experience needed! It will be a catch and release class, weather permitting.

The Youth Center’s after school program is open for Milford youth ages 8-18, free of charge, from 2:15-6:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Only students registered by 1PM each day will be allowed to attend (10 am on vacation weeks). Any forms received after 1PM (or 10 am on vacation weeks), will be allowed to attend the following program day, if completed correctly. This is to ensure we have adequate time to process registrations. For more information about the program, click here. If you are interested in volunteering, please click here!

New Monthly Gratification Post!

Thank you Sandy!

This month’s gratification post is dedicated to longtime volunteer and board member of the Milford Youth Center, Sandy Carponi. Sandy, joined the board in 2005 and has seen the Center through so many milestones! After 18 years of service, we were able to pay tribute to Sandy at her last board meeting who, after 18 years of service on the Milford Youth Commission, is moving from Milford with her family. Sandy’s three sons and husband surprised Sandy at her last meeting, along with State Representative Brian Murray and Select Board Member, Paul Mazzuchelli, both of whom provided citations to Sandy for her years of service! Sandy has been with the Youth Center prior to and throughout the lengthy renovation process and has been a huge factor in the project’s success. Sandy also volunteered her time at so many Youth Center events, including, but not limited to our St. Pat’s Fundraiser, CraftRoots Fundraiser, Telethons, Halloween Event, Find Yourself Fridays, Relay for Life, Thanksgiving Meal and Fashion Show! One memory that the Director, Jen Ward, recalls is Sandy and her husband Mike joining her on a early Saturday morning to retrieve all the original hardware off the doors, before the building was handed over to the contractors for the renovation. Together, the three of them carefully took off each door knob, one by one with a screw driver! Sandy was also so supportive of MYC staff, through all the obstacles that we faced, with such compassion and professionalism. We are thankful for her dedication, wish her only the best but will certainly miss her dedication and fine work.
