Lk 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,

“This generation is an evil generation;

it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it,

except the sign of Jonah.

Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,

so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

At the judgment

the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation

and she will condemn them,

because she came from the ends of the earth

to hear the wisdom of Solomon,

and there is something greater than Solomon here.

At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation

and condemn it,

because at the preaching of Jonah they repented,

and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

This gospel means that firstly, one must always have faith in God and His plan, even when we do not understand all that happens around us. Many of our first grade students have experienced loss of a loved one, or have seen loved ones who are sick and suffering.  We understand that we must rely on God to get us through these hard times.

Secondly, if a person desires proof, all he must do is look around and surely he shall find it. As first graders, it is easy for us to see all of God’s glory around us.  We see Christ in the actions of others, as well as in nature.  We experience Christ through acts of service, prayer, and adoration.

Finally, despite our pride and demands, if we repent, God will always forgive.  We all agree that it sure feels good to know that God is always,  always, always willing to forgive us.  During Lent, we are working extra hard to be like Christ, and seek the Lord’s forgiveness for any of our actions they may not model His example.
