April Happenings at SPL 🌷

April is here, and we have much to celebrate, including:

  • National Poetry Month, celebrating poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters, as well as
  • National Library Week (April 6th - 12th), an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

First Friday Walk

Our April First Friday Walk with Shorewood Longevity Project is a special, historical walk! We'll meet at the library and walk to what once was a steel bridge that connected the Town of East Milwaukee (modern-day Shorewood) to the Village of Humboldt (a German settlement that no longer exists). We'll build community and wellness and share an enriching bit of history for new and returning walkers alike 💗

LEGO Club

Join us to build awesome creations using our large LEGO collection! Each session we will provide a prompt or challenge to spark ideas. Participants can use these prompts or they can work on their own ideas to build their own masterpiece.


This program is geared toward children ages 4-12, with an adult (siblings are welcome). Drop-in anytime during our designated meeting time and have some fun building!

To kick off National Library Week, join Shorewood Public Library for an Indie Lens Pop-Up of Free for All: The Public Library by Dawn Logsdon and Lucie Faulknor. Learn more about how public libraries shaped the country and continue to be a sanctuary for Americans everywhere. 


This film screening is part of PBS Indie Lens Pop-Up, a community series that brings people together for film screenings and community-driven conversations. The screening will be followed by a brief community discussion to engage with the topics and themes of the film. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Shorewood Public Library.


Free for All: The Public Library premieres on Independent Lens on Tuesday, April 29th.

A Golden Era of

Home Construction

This presentation from Keith Stachowiak, AIA, owner of KSK Architects, will cover his experiences working with homes of the 1920s era within Shorewood as well as his own 1929 Tudor. He will also share lessons learned on what to look for and what to cherish about your historic home!

Shorewood School District

Art Show Reception


Thursday, April 10th

Drop-in between 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Location: Shorewood Public Library


Join us in celebrating the Shorewood School District's Annual Art Show which features student art from kindergarten through 12th grade. This is the school district's only event combining all grade levels in one grand exhibition.


Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, May 8th.

"Strange and Unusual" Diorama Contest Begins! 🎉


Monday, April 14th

All Day

Location: Shorewood Public Library



Starting April 14th, pick up your entry form and *a packet of PEEPS® marshmallow bunnies or chicks *(while supplies last). Then, start creating your diorama based on this year's theme: "Strange and Unusual".


The deadline for entries is May 7th. All ages are invited to participate.


The dioramas will be displayed in the Library May 12th through May 25th. Come see all fantastic entries and vote for your favorite in each category: Adult, Children, Mixed Ages, and, NEW this year: Shorewood Village Department.

Parent Social Group with North Shore Health Department

Join us at our Parent Social Group, hosted by North Shore Health Department (NSHD)!


This social group, led by NSHD's Maternal Child Health Specialists, is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to be part of a community of peers. NSHD staff will lead these groups, answer any questions, present on a variety of child-related topics, and provide light refreshments and entertainment for kids.

Building Our Village: A Presentation and Short Film Screening

Celebrate Shorewood's 125th Anniversary with us!


Join us to explore Shorewood's growth, from planned streets to expanding neighborhoods with duplexes, apartments, and homes. Enhance your ability to identify architectural styles that shape the village’s historic character.


The short film we'll screen, The American House: A Guide to Architectural Styles, will teach you to recognize common American house styles and give you the vocabulary to discuss them with confidence.


This program is co-sponsored by the Shorewood Public Library and the Shorewood Senior Resource Center, and presented by Shorewood Historical Society President Kathy Kean.

This 40 minute story time is geared toward children ages 6 months to 6 years but is open to all ages, with an adult (siblings are welcome). We will share stories, songs, flannel stories, fingerplays and much more!

Did you know Shorewood Public Library has Radon Detectors in our collection for check out? They're part of our Library of Things, a type of resource-sharing library where members can borrow various non-traditional items, like tools, equipment, or kits, rather than solely books.


Milwaukee County Federated Library System libraries offer many different items for check out as part of their Library of Things collections as well. You can check out these items with your Shorewood Public Library card! 😊

Library Yard Sign!


National Library Week kicks off on April 6th. Here in Shorewood, the library Friends are spearheading a plan to show appreciation for the library all month long with a community yard sign campaign 🎉


If you would like to join the celebration and display a sign honoring the library in your yard, click here: Library Yard Sign Request. The Friends will place the signs in yards in early April and collect them at the end of the month. The yard signs will feature a new slogan - Great Things Are Happening at Shorewood Public Library. Thanks to Karl Pradel for submitting the winning slogan idea as part of a Friends-sponsored contest earlier this year.

READ-IT! Children's Winter Reading Program Pizza Party


In March we celebrated the end of our READ-IT! Children's Winter Reading Program with a pizza party! 🍕 We had a lot of fun celebrating everyone's reading accomplishments this winter.

The Great Library

Treasure Hunt


The Great Library Treasure Hunt is on!All Milwaukee County public libraries are participating in this fun, scavenger hunt-style event.


Visit as many Milwaukee County libraries as you can, and at each library write down your favorite library feature and get your Treasure Hunt map stamped for a chance to win prizes 🏆


This system-wide program is being coordinated by Milwaukee County Federated Library System (MCFLS) staff and ends on Sunday, May 3rd, 2025.
