Dear farm friends,
More weather talk. After several days of rain, the sun emerges and I hear so many pleasantries like “enjoy the beautiful day,” and “it’s such a nice day.” No doubt I’m a curmudgeon, and of course the sun feels good to me too, but something about all this doesn’t sit right. Why no exultation when it’s rainy? Why is it “dreary” or “bad weather”?
| | Newly tilled fields — very muddy! | |
Don’t they realize, every drop of that rain is precious, not guaranteed, and that very soon we’ll have sunshine for months, as well as heat, dust, and fire? And beyond material need, I love the rain. The delicious feeling of water falling on my skin, all the little ways it gathers in every gully and ditch, the way it contains me in my protective clothing and shelter, even how it makes me cold.

We all see things differently, I guess, based on our relationship to the land and water. We all depend on the rain, entirely. As we depend on the sun. Maybe it can seem abstract or remote. As long as someone makes sure that water is coming out of the faucets, all is well. With farming, nothing is abstract or remote. Muddy soil, saturated, worms on the surface hoping not to drown. Tools rusting, even under cover, because the air is wet too.
| |
And lucky water, filling ponds, trickling, seeping into crevices, feeding roots, recharging aquifers. I know I’m not the only enjoying the rain, for itself, and all it brings. Kids know what to do with puddles. Next time we get lucky, umbrellas out, boots on!
