ADVOCACY ALERT

BIG WIN FOR OUR BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITY

Jawando withdraws Anti-Business Bills

The Greater Bethesda Chamber of Commerce along with the Maryland Restaurant Association and other local chambers strongly and verbally opposed two bills introduced by Councilmember, Will Jawando.

Bill 35-23 Elimination of Tipped Wage - proposed the elimination of the tipped wage in Montgomery County for restaurant servers.

Bill 34-23 Establishment of Wage Commission - sought to establish an advisory wage commission to make recommendations regarding minimum wages and working conditions beginning with the chain restaurant industry, and then to any industry. We felt this to be a very dangerous bill.

It is extremely rare for bills to be withdrawn at the County Council.

Both of these bills were withdrawn on Tuesday, and we applaud the business community, especially our servers and restaurant managers on their efforts.

Age Friendly Employment

Bethany Iverson, who co-founded The Coven – a co-working space -- believes that “designing roles that evolve over time presents a massive untapped opportunity for most employers…. They can make small yet meaningful changes as they imagine new ways to retain highly knowledgeable and skilled older workers in an increasingly competitive employment environment.” Indeed, research conducted for The Coven found that“95 percent of employers have not developed specific tactics to ensure their workplace is age inclusive though nearly all (83%) believe it is.” Only 67 percent of workers agree.

Bonnie Marcus interviews Iverson in her Forbes article at https://www.forbes.com/sites/bonniemarcus/2023/10/20/new-study-reveals-most-organizations-are-not-prepared-for-the-aging-workforce/?sh=1be9cf11268d.
