Weekly eNews

March 10, 2023

We often think about the liturgical season of Lent as being a time for “giving something up” – i.e., shedding some of those unnecessary things in our lives that may, at times, blur or hinder our ability to glimpse God’s hand at work. But this is also an excellent moment for us to seek out some new places where we can (re)engage our spiritual lives. As we move through this Lenten season, I hope you will take an opportunity to find those places where perhaps God is calling you to serve, learn, fellowship, connect, or worship.

I also want to highlight the incredible success of our 2023 Witness Season. Back at the beginning of February, we shared with you about the dire need for clean and safe water at our sister congregation in Santa Clara, Cuba. Through a partnership with Living Waters International we hoped to raise $30,000 to fund the purchase and installation of a water purification system to benefit not only the church but also the Santa Clara community as a whole. Well, once again, all of you – the saints of First Presbyterian – have gone above and beyond. To date, the total amount raised is nearly $40,000!

Thank you. The generosity and faith of our congregation truly never ceases to amaze me. Because of your giving we will not only be able to help provide safe and clean water to our brothers and sisters in Christ in Cuba, but we will be able to continue our support of this congregation and community. Your giving will impact countless lives for years to come – again, thank you.

Blessings to you all. Join us at church this Lent. Invite a friend. See you soon.

Peace,

Rev. Alan F. Dyer

Time to Spring Forward!

Daylight Saving Time, This Sunday

Don't be late for church! Even though we may all feel a little tired on March 12, as daylight saving time begins, set that alarm so that you won't be late for fellowship with your church family (clocks will be set forward at 1:00am local time on Sunday).

Chamber Singers Concert

Wesley Hall - Free Recital and Workshop

March 17 & 18

First Presbyterian Church welcomes Wesley Hall (wesleyharrisonhall.com), a noted and passionate young organist who has gained over 150,000 followers on social media. Wesley is a dynamic organist and early musician with a passion for translating the music of the past into the context of today’s audience. We invite you to join Wesley for two special events:

🎹 Friday, March 17 - A special evening recital, featuring Wesley performing on our sanctuary's Aeolian-Skinner 3-keyboard, 35 stop pipe organ. There will also be a free-will offering to benefit the Spartanburg American Guild of Organists (SPAGO) programs. The recital will take place at 7:00pm in the Sanctuary.

🎹 Saturday, March 18 - Wesley will be leading a morning Social Media Workshop, where he will illustrate how to build an internet following (especially around the pipe organ), a skill that seems lost to our church congregations, lovers of music and young piano students. The workshop will take place at 10:00am in the chapel. Refreshments will provided.

All events are free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. Parking is free.

March WAF Series

Wednesdays, 6:30pm in Fogartie Hall

Mountains play a central role in the stories of the Hebrew Bible. From Sinai to Nebo and Moriah to Carmel, mountains become central places for God’s activity in the ancient world. Our March WAF series, titled "Seeking God in High Places: Visiting the Mountains of the Old Testament," will take us on a hike through the high ground of the Old Testament and explore how the places and people we meet along the way continue inform our faith today.

Acts 2 Dinners

Sunday, March 26

You are invited to join a small group of 10-12 church folks for a meal together, so you can have a proper visit rather than a rushed hello. Hopefully, these stand-alone events will promote new connections and deeper friendships.

In March, there will be a lunch group (12:30 - 2:00pm) if that works better for you. For the dinners (5:30 - 7:30pm), you will again have the choice to be in an intergenerational (22 y.o. – 102 y.o.) or your “same decade” group. Your host will reach out the week before with their address and the menu, and everyone will bring something for the meal. Open to all. The more the merrier! With your questions, contact Ansley: apage@fpcspartanburg.org. Save your spot by clicking the button below. Reservations are due by noon, Monday, March 13.

Day by day . . . they were taking their meals together with gladness and generosity of heart. -Acts 2:46
