Your Week Ahead

January 29-February 2, 2024

KODIAK WEEKLY BULLETIN

We are looking forward to welcoming our Visiting Scholar to campus, Dr. Klaphake, the head veterinarian at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on January 31st (more details below).

Join our long-standing tradition of Dessert Theatre this afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Louisa Performing Arts Center (LPAC) as our 3rd graders present A Mystery at the History Museum, and our 5th graders perform a version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Our Class of 2024 seniors can order some wonderful items including rings, letter jackets, and more here: Jostens. Caps, gowns, and tassels will be covered by CSS. We are so excited about all you have accomplished this year and look forward to supporting your last semester here at CSS.

As many of you are aware, our recent transition in Kodiak Athletics has been much on everyone's mind, including our students. We are fielding many questions and concerns that were expressed this past week about the program's future. Our Middle and Upper School students organized a peaceful walkout to express themselves on the transition and advocated with leadership on how to be more engaged through Forum and Student Council going forward. While school for most continued during this event, we recognize this may have brought up some questions from the younger students about what they may have observed. We always encourage every student to use their voice and believe respectful advocacy is a powerful life skill we teach at CSS. We look forward to moving ahead with our MS and US student feedback as we engaged with through town halls and morning meetings this week.

CSS has been working behind the scenes to ensure that these beloved programs for winter and spring sports are seamless. CSS is pleased to announce our Interim Director of Athletics Dr. Pio Hocate, who has hit the ground running and has many exciting things to share with families, including new scholarship opportunities to make our programs inclusive for all (see below).

We'll see you at the basketball games today in Tutt Field House beginning at 4 p.m., and we anticipate delightful Dessert Theatre performances this afternoon too!

Please let us know how we can support you in the week ahead!

Introducing Interim Athletic Director

Dr. Pio Hocate

Long-time coach and parent at CSS shares his background and the exciting opportunities he will bring to the Kodiak athletics program such as new partnerships with Vanguard.

Meet Coach Hocate

Enjoy a Q&A on his new role at CSS

Q : How is CSS moving athletics forward?

A: The foundational pillars of CSS are a three-legged stool, Academics, Arts, and Athletics. If you take one out it falls.  CSS is committed to providing competitive athletics opportunities but students must participate as either athletes or fans. We are currently exploring additional partnerships with Vanguard and Harrison District to provide expanded opportunities for our students. We are working diligently to structure our program fees for 2024-25 and will announce that in early February. We are basing these on the data from our most recent family survey on fees. Thank you for your continuous support as we move ahead!

In fact, this year we are forming a combined Lacrosse team with Vanguard, CSS, and Harrison based at Vanguard. This will be like the successfully combined teams in D11 at Palmer and D20 at Pine Creek. There will be JV and Varsity teams. The head coach is Rick Gillit from Vanguard. We will try to schedule some practices and some games at Boddington Field.

Q: Tell us about yourself and your background.

A: I'm an MD, radiologist, and retired from practice in 2021. I've been at CSS since 2003 with 3 CSS lifers, Madelyn '16, Hayden '20, and Melinda '27 (9th grade). I've served on the CSS Board of Trustees 2015-2021, and BOT president 2016-2021. My coaching background includes MS boys basketball when Hayden was in Middle School, MS girls basketball when Melinda was in Middle School, and US girls tennis the past 3 years; last year we even qualified for the 3A team state championship tournament!

Q: Can you share a fun athletics fact about you?

A: I played college football at Rice University from 1989-92. I love sports! My kids have grown up in the CSS gym. I love seeing it full of life and energy when one of our teams is competing. GO KODIAKS!!

Q: What are some new opportunities you envision for athletics at CSS?

A: I will continue to explore ways to improve and enhance our athletics programs. We need students to participate as athletes and/or fans. I will encourage families from all divisions to come and cheer on your Kodiaks.

NEW! Sports Scholarships for 2024-25 Seasons

We all want the best for our students. This program has been created for that purpose - to help your student reach their personal goals. And it is offered at no cost to you. We believe that no family should have to choose between their school of choice or enrichment activities for their student. CHE is an organization that helps remove those barriers. Your student is given the support to engage in their activity of choice, click on the form below to register.

CSS is partnering with Inspired Learning, a division of CHE to help support families cover athletic fees. This is a seperate program in addition to any financial aid your family receives from CSS and is not part of the CSS Indexed Tuition. Please complete this form to indicate interest in knowing more about sports scholarship opportunities for the 2024-25 seasons. CHE will reach out to families directly after registration.
