Mid-Shore Arts: DCA's Open Mic is Open to All in Cambridge

20231215_114737-scaled image

Cambridge is starting the year in arts with a big bang! Most events here are provided free with bar and snacks for purchase.

Back by popular demand, Open Mic night at Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) runs every Tuesday night through the end of April.  While weather has prevented the past two Tuesdays, there are 15 more on the schedule, giving talent and audience alike much to look forward to.  Each Tuesday, a different host stagehands the gathering, making sure all those interested in playing get on the list and get to play.  Music isn’t the only thing welcome at Open Mic night.  Storytellers and poets, and actors and writers are welcome too.

For any not acquainted with Open Mics, it simply means that anyone who wants to perform and can keep their performance within allotted time frames (which can change depending on how many sign ups there are) are welcome on the stage.  Generally (and at DCA), it is first-come first-serve on the sign-in sheet.  The DCA audience has proven itself appreciative and attentive and willing to stay until the last performer is done.

Deep Roots for this Hurlock Library

65a456c1ca2ce image

HURLOCK — Hurlock Library’s community roots run deep, dating back, in one form or another, to its founding by Henry Walworth in 1900. The branch, though relatively tiny in building and staff size, is the Eastern Shore’s oldest, Maryland’s second oldest.

Once relatively prosperous, the town has undergone significant changes, today facing a myriad of challenges. But it doesn’t do so alone, thanks to the local Dorchester County Public Library outpost, a vital town focal point at 222 S. Main Street.

A warm, neighborly spirit greets visitors in the front vestibule, with a table laden with free food, donated by Mid-Shore Meals Till Monday, carts containing free books and an array of handy resources materials for those needing assistance.

Talk: The Bramble & Pritchett Familes"

South Dorchester Folk Museum Presents:

"The Bramble & Pritchett Families"

Speaker – Glenn L Bramble

Glenn Bramble will be our first speaker of the 2024 season to discuss the history of the Brambles, Pritchetts, Wingates, and Todds who were the first four families that settled in South Dorchester.

Glenn states “As my mother was a Pritchett, I did some research on the descendants on both sides of the family. I have researched back to the 1700 hundreds for both Bramble and Pritchett ancestors and found it very interesting how different family names are tied together”. He will have several family pictures and photos of old structures including grave markers located in remote areas of South Dorchester.

The South Dorchester Folk Museum (SDFM), in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, presents this FREE program in its lecture series about local history.
