From Patricia K. Mathis,
Manager National FAA Safety Team
|
The FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) appreciates the WINGS Industry Network (WIN) for its tireless efforts to bring safety education and training to more aviators and mechanics. WIN’s primary focus is to find ways to materially increase participation in the FAAASTeam’s cornerstone program, the WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program (WINGS).
|
|
With FAASTeam support, WIN has done the heavy lifting to create these new ways to promote WINGS.
-
EZ WINGS makes it easier than ever to get WINGS credit for things like a new certificate
-
The sweepstakes offer prizes for participating in WINGS
-
WIN Insights highlight industry groups that promote aviation safety and WINGS via Courses
-
The WIN newsletter informs us of what’s going on with WINGS and new WIN initiatives.
-
Now, WIN is producing these WINGSPro Briefings, and we couldn’t be more excited to leverage their expertise in course production and communication for your benefit.

Safely Managing IFR Terminal Transition
|
SAFE Blog, March 25, 2023, by David St. George, Executive Director
|
What are the primary risks of circling approaches, and can they be adequately managed to lead to a safe procedure? The NTSB just finished its meeting and analysis of the Challenger crash at Truckee. There are lots of risks and no magic here. The NTSB recommendations on this will probably follow established guidance from many other groups.
Start with careful consideration of the straight-in approaches and practice getting stabilized, developing standardized pitch, power, and attitude settings to achieve your desired performance. If you are a light plane driver, AvWeb has an excellent (historic) recommendations HERE “pre-brief carefully, determine sensible targets, and fly a known stabilized profile!” IFR magazine offers their advice HERE. The NTSB safety series covers this same material nicely HERE.
Once the straight-in is comfortable and consistent, the circling approach adds the challenge of managing proper power application (level-off) with the low-level maneuvering flight. Read more here.
