Happy birthday, IRE!

IRE was founded Feb. 22, 1975 in Reston, Virginia — exactly 50 years ago this Saturday! To celebrate this historic milestone, we have several exciting events coming up throughout the year. Stay tuned for a special announcement on our website and socials tomorrow!

In the meantime, here's what else you can do to celebrate:

Get 50th merch: Love shopping and love IRE? Check out our online store for merch celebrating the anniversary, including t-shirts and stickers that say "outraged since 1975."

Membership deal for retired journalists: To recognize those who have dedicated their careers to the field of journalism, we're offering a discounted rate of $50. Join IRE or renew your membership, and share your wisdom with the next generation of watchdogs.

Make a gift: As a grassroots nonprofit, IRE relies on the generous support of our donors to host training events, provide resources, connect mentors and mentees, and do all the other great things you know and love about IRE. Help us continue this work (and say "happy birthday!") by giving a donation.

Free Webinar: How to protect yourself from threats before and after they happen

March 27, 1-2 p.m. ET

Journalists are under fire now more than ever. Come to this session to learn about how to put up safeguards to protect yourself, how to respond when your work and your safety are threatened, and how newsroom leaders can be crucial allies when journalists' safety comes into question. This webinar is free to IRE members, but please be sure to register. Not an IRE member? Join now.

More data journalism training

Can't make it to NICAR? Check out our in-person Data Journalism Bootcamp March 24-28. This weeklong workshop will take place at the Missouri School of Journalism. You'll walk away with confidence using Google Sheets and a solid foundation for using data in the newsroom! Beginners welcome.

Looking for more advanced skills? Our online bootcamp, April 22-25, will teach you how to scrape data from the web using Python. Attendees should have a beginner-level familiarity with basic Python syntax rules, like data types and variable assignment.

Host Nakylah Carter interviews Nadia Hamdan and April Simpson about the impact of their investigation. Listen to the episode.

Nominate a journalist for the Don Bolles Medal

The Don Bolles Medal recognizes investigative journalists who have exhibited extraordinary courage in standing up against intimidation or efforts to suppress the truth about matters of public importance. Nominations for the 2025 Don Bolles Medal are due April 1. To nominate someone, please fill out this form.

The IRE Journal is offically online

Check out the new website to explore stories on journalism best practices, investigative tools and techniques, industry news, and the IRE community — like this latest feature about longtime IRE member Tom Koch and how he's helping a new generation of public health reporters and journalists working with disabilities.

IRE members can access the online magazine after logging in at ire.org with their regular login and password. Learn more and see what other stories we have in the works.
