WHAT IS MILES FOR WELLNESS?

Miles for Wellness is a statewide Worksite Wellness initiative designed to encourage all state employees to incorporate daily movement into their lives.

WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health. It can:

  • Control your weight
  • Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
  • Reduce your risk of some cancers
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles
  • Improve your mental health and mood
  • Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls
  • Increase your chances of living longer

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Teams of up to 10 submit their step counts every two weeks for a total of eight weeks. Based on these step counts, teams are placed in one of four divisions designed so teams compete against other similarly performing teams.

DO I HAVE TO WALK OR RUN?

No. Employees are encouraged to take part in whatever physical activities they enjoy. Any physical activity can be converted into an approximate number of steps. Even everyday activities like housework, gardening and walking from the parking lot to work or the grocery store can be converted through our program.

HOW DO I CONVERT OTHER ACTIVITIES?

We've done the work for you. Challenge participants receive a spreadsheet with a dropdown menu of activities. Once an activity is selected and a duration is input, the spreadsheet automatically populates with a step count conversion.

WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A STEP COUNTER OR OTHER FITNESS TRACKER?

No worries! While they may help track daily activity, a fitness tracker is not required. The spreadsheet provided to participants can help you estimate your step count for walking or running too.
