THE METHODIST MESSENGER

Making disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.

The church season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday. We will have a special but brief service at 6 PM to mark the beginning of this season of preparation for Easter.

Traditionally, this is a time of reflecting on our need for redemption. Fasting has always been a devotional time of “making room” for the Lord by giving up something that is a regular feature within our lives.  Some people fast from TV, social media, or a certain meal or food item. Some fast from negative thoughts or being critical of others. Yet some fast from the evening news or other activities. Fasting is simply making time and room to be with God. Creating a time and space requires that something else must be put aside.   In this space we can reflect on scripture, say a prayer, or seek divine guidance. This is a time for remembering that Jesus died for our sins. He becomes our Passover Lamb. He takes away the sins of the world, even mine and yours.

This season of Lent is a special time which truly helps us understand the eternal significance of Jesus’ resurrection.   Lent is 40 days, NOT counting Sundays because Sundays are always little Easters! This Lent let’s all make some special time to be with God and let’s also incorporate additional ways to Love First into our lives. Others will be blessed and our Heavenly Father will be glorified as we grow in grace through faith, hope and love.

Thank you to everyone who made Lucretia's Christmas Wish so special for over the 125 students who attended. Your support of the program through your generous donations, volunteering of your time to work at the event and for the surprise visit from Santa and his two elves visiting with the students. Blessings for all your generosities.

"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; and He shall thrust out the enemy from before then; and shall destroy them." Deuteronomy 33:27

When I have been sad, troubled, or just worried, I can rely on this verse to remind me that I have the promise of God to hold me in His everlasting arms. Whatever mountain I have to climb, or valley through which I must walk through, I can make it with this verse. Dear Lord, help our church in Center, Texas be a beacon for others in their trouble or sadness, and please help our members to welcome visitors and encourage others in our faith. (by Ruby Gunnels)

This week's Ponder is taken from the booklet titled "Lenten Devotions", written by First Methodist Church members in 2008.
