KEVIN STINSON WINS THE 2024 KAL TIRE CUP ORDER OF MERIT

The PGA of BC is thrilled to announce Kevin Stinson as the winner of the 2024 Kal Tire Cup Order of Merit. Through his excellence at PGA of BC provincial championships, PGA of Canada national championships, and on the G&G Tour, Stinson embodied consistency, composure and athleticism throughout 2024.

His year was highlighted by a dominant 13-stroke victory at the PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada, a win that cemented his place in history as the first player ever to claim all three national PGA championships in a career - the PGA Championship of Canada, PGA Assistants’ Championship of Canada, and PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada.

Stinson (Cheam Mountain Golf Course) showcased consistency throughout the season, finishing T-2 at the PGA of BC Championship and adding three victories on the G&G Tour, including a stunning course-record 60 at Nicklaus North Golf Course. His standout year also saw him compete on one of golf’s biggest stages at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open, an opportunity he earned after topping the 2023 PGA of Canada Player Rankings.

With his PGA Head Professional Championship of Canada victory, Stinson clinched his spot on Team Canada for the 2025 Four Nations Cup, an international competition between Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In 2023, Stinson was a member of the winning team in South Africa and he now looks forward defending the title on home soil.

Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre) showcased his excellence with another standout campaign to finish as Order of Merit runner-up. Parry’s season was highlighted by his victory at the 2024 PGA of BC Seniors' Championship. Steven Lecuyer (Seymour Creek Golf Centre), the 2023 Order of Merit champion, claimed his second consecutive PGA of BC Assistants’ Championship title and finished third in the 2024 race.

ST. EUGENE TO HOST 2025 INDIGENOUS CHAMPIONSHIP BRITISH COLUMBIA

Via British Columbia Golf

St. Eugene Golf Resort in Cranbrook has been selected by BC Golf as the host site for the 2025 Indigenous Championship British Columbia from July 21st to 23rd.

“British Columbia Golf and the BC Indigenous Golf Association are excited to return to St. Eugene, which is an outstanding property with a rich history,” said Jerome Goddard, BC Golf Director of Rules & Competitions. “The golf course and surrounding resort amenities will deliver a memorable experience for players, volunteers, friends, and family members.”

Nestled in the spectacular Rocky Mountains and located within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation, St. Eugene Resort celebrates a unique history within a beautiful and rare setting. Once a former residential school, the Mission Building was reclaimed under the visionary leadership of the Ktunaxa Nation and transformed into a full-service resort and beacon of light for the community.

When asked what it meant to be hosting the Indigenous Championship, St. Eugene Director of Golf Operations, Cindy Soukoroff said: "St. Eugene Resort is proudly owned by the Ktunaxa Nation & Shuswap Indian Band and is located on the traditional territory of Ktunaxa Nation. We are honoured to host the 3rd Annual B.C. Golf Indigenous Championship and are excited for the opportunity to showcase indigenous athletes and their culture. This event provides an opportunity to showcase everything our beautiful resort has to offer while building pride and a sense of unity within the community."

The Indigenous Championship will be contested over 36 holes of stroke play with a field size of 120 players. Top finishers will qualify for the Indigenous Challenge Match between British Columbia and Ontario in Fall 2025.

Registration will open on March 26th at 12PM.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that several PGA of BC-affiliated courses played a starring role in Happy Gilmore?

The 1996 comedy classic, which introduced the world to Adam Sandler’s slap-shot golf swing, was filmed at multiple BC courses, including Riverway Golf Course, Swan-e-set Bay Country Club and Furry Creek Golf & Country Club.

Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby was used for scenes featuring the Waterbury Open, the tournament where Happy first rises to fame.

Swan-e-set Bay Resort & Country Club, located in Pitt Meadows, served as the setting for the climactic final battle between Happy and Shooter McGavin at the AT&T Invitational.

Meanwhile, Furry Creek Golf & Country Club, along the scenic Sea-to-Sky Highway, became the location for one of the most iconic scenes in sports movie history, where Happy Gilmore and Bob Barker famously get into a fistfight.

The PGA of BC’s connection to the film goes beyond filming locations—eagle-eyed fans might recognize the Waterbury Open trophy from Happy’s first big win. The trophy used in the movie was actually the original William Thompson Trophy, awarded to the PGA of BC Champion until 2015. That final recipient was Bryn Parry (Seymour Creek Golf Centre), and while the Association has since introduced a new version, the original remains on display at the PGA of BC office.
