Senior of the Year - Jan Irwin

Congratulations to our Senior of the Year, Jan Irwin!

Jan is a long-time resident of Mulmur, and an even longer-time resident of Dufferin County. She is an exemplary role model for older adults with both her work and volunteer contributions to her community, her commitment to staying healthy and aging well, and her love and support for her family.

Jan was born and raised in Toronto, and had grandparents living on a farm in Mulmur. She became a regular summer resident on their farm when she was 15. She is married to Blake Irwin, a (now retired) potato farmer from Melanchthon. They have three adult children and one granddaughter.

In Jan’s working career she was an elementary school teacher with the Dufferin County Board of Education. She also was a Trustee for the Dufferin County Board of Education from 1987-97.

Jan firmly believes in supporting and giving back to her community. While living on their farm, teaching, raising three children, and as a senior citizen, she has volunteered with many local community groups:

Dufferin County Adult Advisory Committee

Dufferin Oaks Long Term Care Home

Community Living Dufferin Board of Education

Trillium Provincial and Demonstration School

Ministry of Education & Training – Special Needs Branch

Hyland Centre Child Centre (1989-96 - Member /Chair)

Jan’s love for life, her commitment to her community and her family, and her personal values to age well, make her an excellent role model for other older adults, and an excellent recipient of the 2023 Mulmur Senior of the Year.

Mulmur Resident Inducted into Canadian Business Hall of Fame

Tony Arrell, a longtime University of Guelph supporter and an alumnus of honour, was inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame (CBHF) on May 11.

Considered the nation’s highest business honour, the Hall of Fame celebrates the achievements of Canadian business leaders and their contributions to economic development and prosperity.

Arrell’s award is a nod to his career-long business leadership ranging from running a top investment management firm on Toronto’s Bay Street to co-directing – along with his wife, Anne – a named philanthropic organization that has been a major U of G benefactor.  The couple are both U of G grads.

“Tony, Anne and his entire family have had a tremendous impact at U of G, establishing the Arrell Food Institute that has helped us become a leader in the agri-food sector as well as expand our innovative research and program offerings.”
