“Money Matters”

Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

Money is a tricky topic. Especially in these days and times when many folk are struggling just to have enough for the basic necessities. It's also difficult if you or your family was raised with the attitude of scarcity; that there is never enough. That’s how I was raised, so I get that.

When I attended seminary and began to study to become a minister, when I learned and understood more about church dynamics, my attitude began to change (well actually it began to change a good number of years before that). I also needed to learn the part that a minister’s message can play in making the pledge drive a success.

I began to appreciate that there is no separation between what a church can offer its members and its community and that church’s budget. Anyway, its that time of year again. See you on Sunday!

“Two Sides, Same Coin. Martin & Malcolm”

Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

Many scholars now see that Malcolm came to see his role as one that could compliment King’s efforts. I do not want to minimize their differences and strategies---African-American Nationalism versus Integration. My Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary, Professor James Cone writes these words:

“It is important to emphasize that Martin and Malcolm, despite the excessive adoration their followers bestowed upon them, were not messiahs. Both were ordinary human beings who gave their lives for the freedom of their people. They show us what ordinary people can accomplish through intelligence and sincere commitment to the cause of freedom and justice. There is no need to look for messiahs to save the poor. Human beings must do it for ourselves. Malcolm and Martin both realized that it is up to each and every one of us to create the things we wished existed." Let's revisit the times of Malcolm and Martin, and take a deeper look at our present time as well. See you on Sunday!

Brother Outsider: The Life Of Bayard Rustin

Tuesday, February 18, 2025

2:00 - 4:15 p.m.

Hosted by RE Director Susan E. Hicks & Rev. Michael J. S. Carter

As part of our Adult Religious Education initiative, RE Director Susan E. Hicks and I will be showing the documentary film, "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin", a film by Bennett Singer and Nancy Kates. Five years in the making and winner of over 25 awards, Brother Outsider illuminates the public and private lives of Bayard Rustin, a visionary activist and strategist who has been called "the invisible man" of the civil rights movement. A tireless crusader for justice, a disciple of Gandhi, a mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr., and the architect of the legendary 1963 March on Washington, Rustin dared to live as an openly gay man during the fiercely homophobic 1940, 1950s and 1960s. Brother Outsider reveals the price that Rustin paid for his honesty, chronicling both the setbacks and triumphs of his remarkable 60 year career.

See you there!

Women's Group

February 15, 2025

1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

The women’s group will meet Saturday, February, 15, 2025 at 1:00 pm at UUCSV. Please bring a snack and your own drink. Given that we are meeting the day after Valentine's Day, we will be widening that light by having love as our theme. Consider what you do in your life that you love to do….something that keeps you focused and gives you strength in these turbulent times. You might bring a manifestation of this such as a photo, a dance, a writing or a story about this activity and what it means to you. We will spend time sharing this with each other. New members are welcome to attend. Please email me with any questions at poetscloth@frontier.com. Donations to UUCSV

If you are someone who remits donations to UUCSV through a broker’s account, please be aware that the broker’s check does not always indicate who has initiated the check (the donor). When that occurs, we do not have the ability to assign the donation amount to the person who made the donation. If you are one of those individuals, you can contact Deb Evenchik at 615-351-4364 to let her know the amount of your donation. Deb is the person who updates UUCSV’s database for donations made.

Member & Community Activities

ROUND ROBIN dinners are back for another year!

These dinners—which were a big success last year—are one of the best ways to get to know your fellow UUs and build community at UUCSV. Jeff Hutchins has once again offered to sign up participants, schedule the dinners and help us organize. It's a big job, so thank you, Jeff!

We need people to both host and attend the dinners, so hosting isn’t necessary but encouraged. Hosts will organize one dinner and be guests at two other dinners. If you do not host, you are guaranteed to be invited to at least one dinner. These dinners are participatory: hosts prepare a main course and guests bring side dishes, drinks, desserts, etc.

To participate during April-June, you MUST SIGN UP by March 2, 2025. For more information, see the fliers in the foyer or on the UU Bulletin Board.

To sign up, please email Jeff Hutchins:
