Tai Tokerau Trades Training Newsletter
Hapaitia te ara tika pumau ai te rangatiratanga mo nga uri whakatipu.
Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence, and growth for the future generation.
Tēnā koutou katoa,

Tai Tokerau Trades Training would like to extend a special acknowledgement to all the school staff for the fantastic mahi during the lockdown and for supporting your learners in the school environment during the different alert levels.

We would like to pass on our thoughts and offer of support in particular to our Far North school teams. We are thinking of you and your akonga, who have now had to cope with further disturbances to an already unsettled 2 years of education. You have adjusted to such difficult circumstances with incredible agility and resilience and our team would like to think you for your amazing mahi.

We send encouragement to all senior students for their study prep and exam finals. Here are a few study tips for the senior students
  • Make a study plan
  • Develop study groups with your peers, whānau and school staff
  • Don't be shy to ask for support
  • Take time to reflect and relax but don't get distracted by the game or social media
  • Chill to music to destress
Here are some videos from students and school staff providing study tips for NCEA exams. Good luck and let that hard work pay off.
We’ve had recent transitions at Tai Tokerau Trades Training, especially with the Education to Employment Brokerage Service team. Mano Thompson has transitioned into his new role as the Engagement Liaison in our Whakahu Whakamua programme, however, Mano is always happy to support our EEB team with events and engagement with secondary schools.
We are sad to announce that Regina Rapata has left us to embark on her new journey of full immersion in Te Ao Māori. Regina started her Tai Tokerau Trades Training haerenga /journey with us on 31 March 2021, the first week of Alert Level 4 lockdown. Regina was the first kaimahi that we brought into our whanau mahi to work alongside Roimata Haika, Maea Pivac and Rick Lunn commencing operations of the Education to Employment Brokerage Service.
We admire Regina so much for her commitment to Te Ao Māori and her desire to support and expand the implementation of te tirohanga Māori within our whanau mahi. Regina looks forward to her new journey as well as supporting us with the various projects supporting our region. Ko koe he wahine toa, he mana wahine. Thank you so much for trusting in us and working for us in our infancy stages to where we are now.
We welcome back Roimata Haika from maternity leave with a very special taonga melting our hearts, Tāwhai Nobel. Roimata returns to her role as Manager, Projects and Strategy supporting the EEB team and the various projects here at Tai Tokerau Trades Training. Nau mai, hoki mai.

We are also excited to welcome Awhina Wickens as the new Vocational Coordinator joining the EEB team. Awhina is a qualified Hairdresser and has extensive experience in this industry. Her commitment to her community is shown by her contribution back to the community through the Tu Kaha ki te Ao Marama Trust and the wananga they deliver. She cannot wait to awhi and support the journey of our taitamariki in the high schools.

Our EEB team will be in touch with their dedicated schools for introductions and planning for 2022.

Event updates 2021:
POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The EEB team regret to confirm the postponement of these events due to Covid-19. We are committed to the kaupapa of these events and will continue with their planning for 2022, so that our tai tamariki do not miss these valuable learning experiences.
School Highlights
Tai Tokerau Trades Training was thrilled to see an ex-secondary school student of 2021 whom we supported into employment in a trade pathway completing some amazing mahi in our workplace recently.

It was awesome to see her out in the workforce, working hands-on earning and learning in her new trade. Our team consider this one of the most rewarding aspects of our roles. What a pleasure it is to have played a part in this tai tamahine career pathway.
A special tautoko to Fastsignz for collaborating with our EEB team to find their ideal apprentice.

Industry Highlights
What sets G & H Training aside from other organisations?
If you like working with your hands, a trade course is a great way to get started in the construction industry.
We, at G & H, have friendly and supportive tutors that are real tradies with onsite experience. They can relate to what the industry is about and what students need when they get out in the real world working in the industry with a building career. They’ll mentor you along the way, help with goal setting and prepare you for working life on a building site.

Above all you will be treated with the respect you deserve as part of our Whanau.

What do we offer:
Level 2 Pathway to a Building Career. (PBC)
Level 3 Construction Trade Skills. (CTS)

Student testimonial:

"Kia ora I’m Jaymee and I’m a level 3 student at g + h carpentry course.
This is by far the best building course in northland.. it’s a 36 week course that teaches you all you need to know about building. I’ve really enjoyed attending the course as I’ve learnt so much and made so many new friends, the tutors are incredible at their job, always happy to help and enforce the idea “no question is a dumb question”.
Through this course the bookwork I complete will help me through my apprenticeship. I'll have completed almost 70% of the bookwork I need to do in my apprenticeship that they set me up with. They find the best builders out there to send you out to work with. Attending this course will be an experience I will never forget! There's never a dull day of course. I would 100% recommend anyone who wants to get into the building industry to come and check out this course! "

Roll call for Role Models
Inspiring the Future is an exciting new programme for schools across Aotearoa.

At an Inspiring the Future event, young people hear from volunteers from their own communities, learn about different jobs and why people love doing them, as well as how those people got started in their careers.

Inspiring the Future can be a powerful experience that can broaden young people’s horizons and give them a strong sense of the possibilities. Keeping our students safe is important. All our volunteers need to complete a criminal record check before they can be an Inspiring the Future role model. Find out more about how we safeguard the students here. Inspiring the Future in-person events to last up to 4-5 hours. You should allow time to travel to and from the event and up to 1 hour for preparation.

Inspiring the Future online event times will vary but should be between 1-2 hours. For this event type, you will be able to dial in from the comfort of your own home or place of work. If a school invites you to their Inspiring the Future event, you’ll receive an email asking you to log in to the website and find out more.

Signing up as a role model doesn’t mean you have to participate in events. You can accept or decline as many event invitations as you wish based on your availability.
