Welcome to Spring!
No fooling around today, the daffodils have been having a field day this year with the mild winter and early start to the warmer weather. This month's newsletter is filled with lots of ideas on how to celebrate Easter and Passover a little healthier as well as a focus on pain and how to minimize it.
As you read our newsletter this month, either for the first time or a happy return to it time after time, our continued hope is that you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy creating it for you to learn about the latest in health news and what is happening in our community. Please feel free to share with anyone you think might benefit. Nothing makes us happier than hearing from you all when you read something special!
Yours in Wellness,
Jennifer and Christina

This month's newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Jennifer's Aunt, Lynda Hafenmaier, whom we lost last month. One of the most warm and welcoming people you could meet, she opened her home to everyone. With a love of hosting, flowers, and all creatures great and small, she was a beautiful person inside and out.

Are you suffering from Pain due to Arthritis?
|
|
Are you having pain or inflammation in your joints? Arthritis (known as Bi Syndrome in
Chinese medicine) is commonly treated with acupuncture and Eastern medicine. More than 80% of the population after the age of 65 is affected by osteoarthritis. This type of arthritis is caused often from degeneration causing painful and stiff joints.
In Chinese medicine we break this down into groups.
Bi syndrome: there is hot bi, cold bi, damp bi or wind bi or combinations. For example: cold bi is made worse with cold, damp bi is when you feel a heavier sensation in a joint and is often worse with humidity or rain. Sometimes the pain has a combination such as cold damp bi syndrome or hot damp bi. We refer to wind when we are referring to moving pain in the body that changes location (systemic pain that changes).
Rheumatoid arthritis is caused from your body attacking its own tissues and is an autoimmune condition, in this situation there are often boney deformities. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been known to help reduce the pain of both of these types of arthritis although rheumatoid arthritis can often be more challenging to treat.
Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis that affects the skin, nails and causes red scaly patches or psoriasis and can also cause joint swelling. All of these conditions can be treated with acupuncture and herbs and can also be reduced through lifestyle and diet.

Accessibility with Style
"More and more people are starting to age in place ... it's now become our brand's mission to incorporate accessibility into everything we do."
Pottery Barn
According to Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies, half of all homes are headed by someone over age 50 who wants to live longer at home. By 2037, households with someone over age 80 will double to more than 14 million. While most older adults want to age in place — the term used for those who want to stay in their homes — many live in "Peter Pan" homes, meaning homes built for people who will never grow older. In fact, according to the National Association of Homebuilders, nearly half of the homes in the US were built before 1980, and 38% before 1970. Only 1% of 100 million homes in America use any type of universal design to make the home ageless, assistive and accessible.
While entries, kitchen and bedrooms can all be changed to accommodate aging, the biggest safety risks are in the bathroom where 80% of all falls at home happen.
The new Accessible Home line from Pottery Barn includes pivot mirrors (helpful whether standing or sitting, such as in a wheelchair), beautiful yet strongly functional grab bars that add style and safety to dated bathrooms, stylish task lighting options for declining eyesight and more.
The most popular furniture items have been leather power lift recliners with easy-to-read buttons on the remote for various reclining positions that also feature a lift assist to help with getting in and out of the chair. It also has easy-to-reach side pockets for reading glasses, medications, smartphones and other items that need to be handy but hidden to help with decluttering.
Other favorites are the L-shaped desk and apothecary sink vanity that now accommodate wheelchair height, with the sink also offering reduced depth to ensure you can easily reach the faucet.

What we are Loving Right Now
KAILO Pain Patch
The Microtech Patch Designed to Relieve Pain in Seconds
The technology inside the Kailo Pain Patch is a combination of conducting and semi-conducting materials that form a uniquely arranged sheet of tiny capacitors. These capacitors were invented as an antenna to assist in the receipt and transmission of electromagnetic waves. The inventors of the antenna technology accidentally discovered that the process that this technology uses to receive and transmit signals makes it uniquely suited to interact with the body’s electrical signals in the nervous system. The conducting materials in the Kailo Technology are common elements that are non-toxic and natural.
Your Body is an Electrical System
The Kailo™ capacitors work in harmony with your body’s electrical system like a bio antenna. You may even feel your Kailo begin to get warm as your nervous system responds.

The Annapolis Arts District creates the first public sculpture Garden in Annapolis
Join the Annapolis Arts District and the Annapolis Library on West Street to celebrate a new sculpture garden that will feature large metal sculptures by guest artist David Hayes. The 15 sculptures which have been seen around the City of Annapolis for the past year and a half will be moved to the Micheal E Bush Library grounds on West Street for the April 15th opening event and remain through the summer so they can all be enjoyed in one place before they move on to another state. This will create one of the first public sculpture gardens in Annapolis.
Throughout the opening day (April 15th) there will be live music, art activities, poetry, storytime, yoga, and self-guided walking tours of the sculpture gardens. The son of the artist David Hayes will be on-site during the event to share stories and answer any questions you may have about the works. So grab your friends and family and bring a picnic blanket or chairs and join us in the Sycamore Grove (the tree-lined area on the side of the library) for a day of food, fun, and art!
9-10 am: Yoga in the Grove (area on the side of the library)
