The Bach Society of Minnesota is delighted to team up for a second time with Rochester's superb choir, the Choral Arts Ensemble. Join them for an unforgettable afternoon of music from the Bach family -- J.S. Bach, his second son C.P.E. Bach, his uncle Johann Ludwig Bach and his father-in-law Johann Christoph Bach—and their illustrious friends G.P. Telemann, the godfather of C.P.E. Bach, and fervent Bach disciple Johannes Brahms. They promise a joyous musical banquet!

Ribot Painting Undergoing Restoration

The "Entombment" by Theodule-Augustine Ribot (1823-1891) normally displayed above the celebrant's chair on the north wall of the Sanctuary, has been removed for cleaning and restoration.

The Midwest Art Conservation Center removed layers of dust and grime, likely due to residue from burning incense and candles. The painting also received a layer of protective varnish (see video below) and now awaits a new supportive backing. The painting should be reinstalled by Easter.

"It is a dark and forbidding scene. Its darkness was inspired not so much by the tragedy of the episode, as by Ribot's deep respect for such seventeenth-century practitioners of "dark" realism as Jusepe de Ribera." - Eric C. Hansen, in "Cathedral of Saint Paul: An Architectural Biography.

Théodule Ribot

(1823-1891)

The Entombment was hung soon after the opening of the edifice in 1915.

Mary Hill donated the painting in 1919, following the passing of her husband, James J. Hill. The railroad magnet has curated a celebrated collection of nineteenth-century French art.

Ribot was a French realist painter and printmaker, who received the Legion of Honor in France in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the art scene.
