February 2024 E-Blast
| |
With February comes growing daylight โ, and we're officially past the halfway point between the Winter Solstice & the Spring Equinox. In the lessening darkness, we spent extra time this month gathering eclectic, top-notch educator resources to teach about birds ๐ฆ(Section 1), get outside (Section 4), Leave No Trace (Section 4), celebrate Black History Month (Section 5) & more. While we are past February 14th, February is still a Happy Heart ๐ Month! (Section 1) Check out all of the amazing teacher workshops coming up through April in Section 2.
Although the winter cold ๐ง can make it challenging to get outside, the many associated benefits make the effort worthwhile! Spending just 10 minutes outdoors each day raises Serotonin levels, increases Vitamin D production, boosts immunity, and relieves stress. Try to use this edition of the E-blast to get OUT THERE!
If you were a Black Bear ๐ป, you could be sleeping ๐ด through this Pennsylvania winter's cold! A denning adult bear can go as many as 200 days without eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom ๐ฝ! Bears live off the fat reserves they worked so hard over the summer & fall to acquire, recycling their waste & losing fat but NOT MUSCLE! Bears also recycle Calcium back INTO their bones and avoid the loss of bone density that affects people who are inactive for long periods of time. Many nagging injuries heal with little scarring and NO infection! Um, WHAT?! Can you believe bears' bodies can do all of that while they are dormant?! We learned these amazing facts from the February edition of the BearWise Email. BearWise seeks to help people ๐งโโ๏ธ live responsibly with Black Bears ๐ป.

Over these four days, everyone is invited to spend time watching & counting as many birds ๐ฆ as they can find and then report their findings. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations.
Simply watch birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the 4 days, and report what you see to help scientists better understand & protect birds. Count as many times as you like during the event.
Learn more at https://www.birdcount.org/
-
If you are a beginning bird admirer & new to bird ID, try using the Merlin Bird ID app to report what birds you are seeing or hearing.
-
If you have participated in the count before & want to record #'s of birds, try the eBird Mobile app or enter your bird list on the eBird website.
-
If you already contribute to Merlin or eBird, continue what you are doing! All entries over the 4 days count towards GBBC.
-
By entering your sightings, you're automatically entered to win ZEISS binoculars!๐ญ
-
Birding is better when it's shared! Share what youโre seeing on social media with #GBBC or #GBBC2024.
๐บ Watch the 2024 GBBC World Map of Bird Observations light up in real time. Each submitted bird checklist becomes a glowing light on the bird sightings map.

Winter โ Recreation-Leave No Trace Series
Principle 2: Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces
๏ปฟ
According to Leave No Trace (LNT), the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace - Winter Recreation recommends to... "Stick to trails and stay on deep snow cover whenever possible. In muddy spring conditions stay on snow or walk in the middle of the trail to avoid creating new trails & damaging trailside plants. Travel & camp away from avalanche paths, cornices, steep slopes, & unstable snow. Choose a camp site on a durable surface- snow, rock, or mineral soil- not tundra or other fragile vegetation & 200' from lakes & streams. Too much snow to tell if you are near a water source? Consult your map!"
Interested in snowshoeing โ this winter? Consider attending one of the upcoming snowshoeing events scheduled this month at a Pennsylvania State Park!
