Dear Colleagues,
In this edition we are excited to report back on the new Physician-Scientist Career Development program (PSCDP) and highlight the Biomedical Sciences DEI committee, with two new members from the Department of Medicine and a call for student volunteers. One of the many exciting funding opportunities listed in this issue is the DOM Cohort Grant, which supports the initiation or enhancement of patient cohorts for junior investigators aimed to generate data for future larger proposals. The data from these cohorts has contributed to over $7.5M in funding and counting. In addition, there is a networking opportunity for women faculty members led by Rupal Shah and Sarah Goglin on April 26. Read on for more information about these and more.
All the best,
Diane and David

UCSF Career Development Resources for Lab-Based Physician-Scientist Trainees
The Physician-Scientist Career Development Program (PSCDP) is a new program formed by the departments of Medicine, Pediatrics, and Neurology to support laboratory-based physician-scientist trainees at UCSF. Started in Fall 2021, PSCDP is aimed at fostering the recruitment, career development and long-term success of a diverse group of physician-scientists in the residency through independent faculty phases, recognizing the intense challenges associated with the physician-scientist training path. This new program is led by Director Alexandra Nelson (Neurology), Associate Directors Cathy Smith (Medicine), and Sanjeev Datar (Pediatrics), and Program Administrator Camille Perez.
Thus far, PSCDP has created a website with resources for physician-scientist trainees, held three Town Halls for physician-scientist trainees, and sponsored an NIH K Award workshop. In addition to providing career development programming, the program hopes to foster greater transparency about the career path, including important benchmarks for success and ways to achieve them. In the future, PSCDP hopes to increase the mentorship, sponsorship, and mutual support within the UCSF laboratory-based physician-scientist community.

UCSF Announcement of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) DEI Committee and Request for Student Representatives
Congratulations to Drs. Franklin Huang and Sara Suliman on their appointments as DOM faculty members of the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) DEI committee. The purpose of the committee is to develop diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts both within the BMS program and UCSF itself.
They are looking for student volunteers to join the committee. The hope is to effect real change in the way the program operates (outreach, admissions, community building, curriculum, etc.) to help ensure a diverse and equitable environment for all current and future BMS community members.
If interested, please send a brief blurb to Committee Chair, Dr. Franklin Huang.
