Jon's Corner

Hi Everybody
How’s it going? March is Disability Awareness Month.  It started 36 years ago and it’s about pride, joy, and determination about our future as people who live with disabilities.

It’s about what we can do.  We want our voices to be heard and we need to make change!
We may have challenges in our lives that we can tackle.
The Disability Community will keep doing our part. It takes ALL of us. We need YOUR help. We want you tell people about Disability Awareness Month so they can understand what this Month is all about.
So, what does Disability Awareness Month mean to you?

Kile's Corner

Hi to all Self- Advocates.
This is Kile Pelletier with another Kile’s Corner for the month of March 2023.

March has been a busy month but there's one thing I've done in March that I would love to talk to you about. I was involved in my hometown's town meeting in Fort Kent. I talked to a few legislators, all from Fort Kent, about things that affect people with disabilities.

The first week of March always kicks off with the weekend of Can-Am Dog Sled Races and a town meeting where citizens can meet the legislators. They talked about different issues that they have been working on for our community. I think this is important because people have a chance to voice concerns and talk about issues that affect their lives.

Events such as the dog sled races gave me another opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with the legislators, Senator Troy Jackson, Representative Benjamin Collings, and Representative Austin Theriault. We discussed issues such as the Life Span Project and the opening of the Section 29 waiver which is part of the Life Span Project.

Being your own self-advocate and attending a town hall meeting in your community is important. It’s a way that you'll be able to make a difference and speak up about issues that affect you. You can also learn about other issues that your town or city council is working on. I feel self-advocates should try and attend their own town meetings. They can build new relationships and speak out about issues that need to be changed in their community.
I quote as a Self-Advocate, “Nothing About Us Without Us”
