Rain, rain, go away. It's not often we say that in Colorado but after getting more than 25% of our annual moisture from one storm it sure is nice to have the sun back out again! Hopefully your water features (and properties) survived the storm without too much damage.

How to Care for Koi in Spring |
|
Spring is an exciting season for koi keepers. Ice melts from the pond’s surface, the water begins to warm, and your fish slowly show signs of life again. You may have been a little worried about your fish through the winter, and then breathed a sigh of relief to see them moving about. Still, with temperature fluctuations that are typical in spring, your koi need a little tender loving care this time of year.
A good way to help your koi start the season healthy, is to clean the pond and add beneficial bacteria. Koi are ectothermic, which means they have little ability to maintain a constant body temperature, which is usually a bit warmer than the water in which they live. Keep in mind, their immune system isn’t very operable in temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so they need all the help they can get in springtime.
While your koi’s immune system is slowly becoming more effective as water temperatures warm, many species of bacteria and protozoa are quickly becoming very active and reproducing rapidly. This means your fish are at greater risk of becoming sick. Cleaning the pond in spring and adding beneficial bacteria helps reduce the likelihood of illness.

Water conservation is becoming a bigger and bigger topic as the Colorado population continues to grow. On April 20, Tim Boettcher from True Pump and other industry experts discussed this topic at the Colorado Water Garden Society's "Get Wet" program at the Denver Botanic Gardens. We talked about the multitude of benefits of water features and how you can transform your yard from water guzzling sod to other more water wise options like water features! |

Fish and aquatic plants are both now available! We currently have a good selection of standard and butterfly koi and will have Shubunkin goldfish available in a couple of weeks. For aquatic plants, we now have both hardy water lilies and marginals and will have water hyacinth and water lettuce available in early June.
The Faux Basalt Columns we had on display at the Garden & Home Show were a huge hit and we finally have those in stock also. They are available individually, in sets of 3 or 5, or as a complete kit with 3 columns, a pump and an AquaBasin.
